Sometimes you can find a Gibson electric in this budget but it'seems rare. I recently bought a 1999 Gibson LP Special for $500.

Also check out Epiphone and Peerless. Eastman also makes several Gibson clones. I found an Eastman 335 clone in a store yesterday for $500 used.

Not as rare as you think:

$350 on coupon day will get you a Bugera V22 1x12" combo at you local GC/Sam Ash or online; while these are great little amps right out of the box, they really come alive with a few minor DIY tweaks (new tubes - the POS $1.29 Chinese tubes are the weak link in this baby - replacement speaker, etc.). I upgraded mine with a set of Soviet-era mil-spec power tubes, matched-triode preamp tubes, a mild rebias job (if you value your butt don't do this unless you know what you're doing), and an Eminence Swamp Thang speaker; for a net investment of ~$500 (still within your budget) I've got a tone-clone of the old '60s Ampeg Gemini II/B-12XT New York studio "key club" amps that'll put out "big clean" sound for days, hang with my '65 Super RI volume wise (I've used it in a 650-seat auditorium with no problem), give me Beatles "NME '65" Vox AC-50 chime and "brown" Marshall crunch tones when I kick in the mid-boost and/or OD - and still power down to bedroom levels with the pentode/triode switch. I figure if you're a real tonehead, you'll wind up with a low/mid-powered tube amp sooner or later - why not start off on the right foot...

Amen. A tube amp is best.

There are a few questions you need to answer up front.

Single Coil or Humbuckers ?

Solid or hollow body ?

I think what you want to play and sound like will dictate much of what guitar and amp you want.

I plugged my strat into the ZT lunchbox this week. Awesome amp. Great flexible tones in a super solid amp. I play a 2000 dollar tube amp in my bedroom and could be perfectly happy with the ZT. It gets loud. I also own a fender mustang 111 and a small vox ac4tv. I would take the lunchbox over either of them.

I would add to that a strat or tele of your choice!

After 50 yrs of playing more guitars than I can remember, my ultimate combo is:

1960 Harmony Meteor w/Bigsby. > 1972 Fender Deluxe Reverb

Well, the OP is on a $1,000 budget. He's not going to be able to afford your Deluxe Reverb or my Super Reverb https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjGivYXWS58

Back when I played electric, my poison was the Telecaster and a Fender PRRI - just a sick combination that produces killer tones. Go to You Tube and look up Jim Campilongo demoing the Fender PRRI - better yet, here you go, just press play!!

Amp? Bugera V5, hands down. Best deal in electric guitar amps.

That leaves you $800 for a guitar. Les Paul, Strat, Tele, or Epiphone Wildkat would be nice ones to look at.

Default Electric Guitar & Amp Suggestions

You have great suggestions so far. I note several repeat recommendations for specific amps. The newer mustang amps do have a lot to offer.
I agree with many that prs she's are great values.
I believe a used G&L can be a great buy. As primarily an acoustic player, I have found their ASAT classic particularly easy to transition to.

And a few more:

The electromatic line of Gretsch is one I would consider.
Also, the imported Guild electrics are pretty nice guitars with more of a blues / rock-a-billy vibe. Lately I have noticed them priced at just below 900 new so that is at the high end of your range. I bought the M75 Freshman imported guitar a short while back. It is a pretty cool instrument (no hard rock for it, though). The other models deserve your consideration.

Good luck.

Here you go. If you use coupon code "fallsave14" before the 13th you save $90 on the amp. That'll give you a great rig right at your budget.
Just to clarify my earlier post:

The SGJ is a genuine made in Nashville Gibson. It is ready to gig right out of the box. For less than $500 it is not just a "good guitar for the money", it is a good guitar period.

The VHT amp is all tube, hand wired, and has a birch cabinet. NO printed circuit board, no particle board cab. It comes with 6v6 power tubes, but will accept 6L6, 5881, and EL34 also. I use this amp for rehearsals and it sounds great. It will also work for small club gigs.

Default All out on the Amp

I do think there are certain amp/guitar combos that were made for each other, and I think that the right pickup/amp combination is important...but forced to choose..all out on the amp and skimp on the guitar.
