Default Build Thread: Klepper 00, Brazilian/Red Spruce

Good morning!

Howard and I are going to take one more adventure. This will be an epic 00 with the following known specs:
  • 12-fret 00 (Martin shape)
  • Cutaway
  • Elevated fretboard
  • Side purfling, one-piece neck with Martin style dart and heel, ebony fretboard with no inlays (but with side markers)
  • 25.4" scale
  • 1-13/16 nut, 2-3/8" bridge spacing (ebony pyramid bridge)
  • Adirondack red spruce top
  • Brazilian rosewood back and sides, matching Brazilian rosewood binding.

To be determined: top and back purflings, back stripe, headstock binding or bevel with multilayer veneers, fretboard binding, side sound port, tuners, slotted headstock.

Generally I am happy to let Howard take the lead in appointments and aesthetics.

We looked at a few sets of B/S wood and chose the following wonderful set:

Howard joined the top. We are going with red spruce on this one, for a little more fundamental sound. It is a killer Adirondack top that has been seasoning for 9-10 years; perfectly quartersawn, regular grain line spacing, no color streaks, great ring when tapped:

The rosette is also in:

And we have ways of making the top talk:

I am looking forward to this!

John

Having played a number of Howard's guitars, and in particular a vintage style OM and 000-12, I can tell you this is going to be one SICK guitar. And I mean sick in the sense that it will be awesome. Not stomach aches and coughs.

I'll not breath deeply while the finish is gassing off

Hey Marc. Whattup?

John is a repeat client and is a pleasure to work with. I appreciate him leaving the details of the design to me. My goal is to build a guitar with a vintage Martin look and sound, while incorporating some modern construction features. John is sensitive to the comfort of his picking arm as it goes around the body, so I will keep the depth close to Martin's. But it will be slightly wider than a 12-fret Martin 00, and use voicing methods that bring up the bass a bit (X location, scalloping, etc.).

Good morning everyone.

I have a few photos from Howard including the roughed out elevated fret board. I have a subtly elevated fret board on a classical and like it. When I first discussed the 00 with Howard it hadn’t occurred to me to bring this up until I saw this photo from his gallery: http://www.klepperguitars.com/koacedar.html

Another one: this page has a shot of the neck/fret board of the Nakyd Laydie guitar: http://www.klepperguitars.com/gallery2.html. Howard advises that one be over 18 to play this guitar…

Here is the neck:

And the headstock:

And also the Brazilian back

John suggested that I do more posting myself on this thread. So here's the progress.

Back bracing is done.

Sides are bent. I'll tweak them and bend the cutaway next.

John likes a very plain neck with no markers on the fretboard face. This is one of my best fretboards--quartersawn Diospyros perreiri, the blackest and finest grained ebony in the world. Too bad it comes from Madagascar. This was old stock at a hardwood dealer when I bought it several years ago; but I have since stopped buying Madagascar wood. I bound it with Brazilian rosewood--cutoffs from the side set of this guitar.

Fretted with EVO gold; abalone side dots.

Carving the dart on the back of the headstock is one of my favorite jobs. I rough it out before carving the neck, and then get back to it for its final trim.

Cutaway bent and reinforced; blocks in.

Top bracing done; late afternoon light.

Hello Howard. Just wondering about your bending process. Do you bend both sides initially in a bender with a non-cutaway form, then do the cutaway after by hand?

Regards,
Drew

Thanks Howard, what a nice way to start the day. I noticed the time stamp on your post - this has either been converted to EST or the coffee is very strong out your way.

The golden hour photo of the top is beautiful contrasting the bone wood with the red and yellowing afternoon light…The Shroud of Klepper…

Congrats, jmat. Things are looking good. Howard makes great guitars and his OOs are particularly stunning in tone. I have had the pleasure of playing several over the years. It is fun watching this one come together. Nice work as always, Howard.

Best,
Jayne

Yes. But a bender form and blanket is less risky for a "Venetian" cutaway.

I like to build without molds, so I tweak the sides after using the Fox bender, to get them more exact.
