Ya know... We just gave our new born daughter the middle name of Magnolia... You have my wheels-a-turnin'.

The back has been surfaced differently than the sides. All of the Magnolia is from the same 2" x 16" x 47" billet. There is a huge difference between heart and sap of course, and the back has both types whereas the sides only one type.

I am calling it heart and sap, but I don't know that that is actually what accounts for the color change.

Thanks for the explanation... no matter what is accounting for the colour change, I really like the way it looks. All the best, berf

What is this "colour" change of which you speak?

Congratulations! "Maggie" may be inevitable, which I personally have a warm feeling about. "Gnolia" is potentially fun, too. I know, I went too far.

The Magnolia/Adi L-00 body is complete, and the Walnut is an hour behind it!

Do you use a different brace wood for your adi or sitka tops? Or do you use the same material and brace for what the top needs? I seem to remember you maybe mentioning something on what you use at UMGF but I can't recall and their site is not being friendly to me.

It's been quite a few years since I built with Sitka, but if I did I'd use the same Adirondack I've been bracing with for the last 15 years or so. I do not imagine the bracing material is a big player where tone is concerned, and I use Adi because it is fantastically consistent structurally and I have a feel for it.

Here's the Walnut (German spruce top), as suggested earlier. I have made several Walnut guitars, but I don't think I've used Claro before, and I am finding it quite stunningly beautiful:

I could not recall if you used Sitka or not, just assumed and was wondering if you used different brace stock. But that does make sense to have one material that you know well and and use it.

While there are many showing their wonderful work that I take great pleasure in seeing, there are a handful of luthiers who's work resonates more with me and I am hoping some of their methods and aesthetics impart something on my future builds. Your guitars just seem to have a natural elegance to them inside and out. The appointments do not overpower the nature of the instrument. Almost like the guitar is saying 'yes I have my looks but first and foremost I am a guitar and my purpose is to make music'.

It is refreshingly stress free to make simpler guitars! Also, they are remarkably less expensive, and since they sound and play as well as anything else I make they tend to sell relatively quickly. . . . we'll see how that goes.

I put these two L-00's into finish today and now I can show you what the wood really looks like; very close to the completed state.

Here's the Magnolia:

(Adirondack)

And here's the Walnut:

(German)

Bruce,

Those are lovely.. Both sets of wood are equally amazing. Shame I don't live anywhere near your shop as I'd love to have a chance to play them.

We visited Bruce's shop a few years back. I want to state that it is a beautiful building!

(Give my best to your girls, Bruce. See you in a few weeks.)
