Default Want to buy a Dobro!

Id really like some help here.

Ive always wanted one, but i dont play dobro. I do play guitar, mandolin, and fiddle. I figure i should be able to pick it up. I have a few things i want. I want the Dobro name on the headstock, slotted headstock, square neck, loud, and i want it to sound good For under 2 grand.

Im really unfamiliar with the model designations, so i dont even know what model i want. I did check out a 76 OMI 60DS at a store. Its the only one ive been able to find, it seemed alright, but i dont play and neither did the shop owner so i really cant judge its sound.

I play bluegrass and blues, and i hope to get good enough to take it to my jam one day.

Any Recommendations?

Used is your only option. Gibson owns the Dobro name and is only producing the Chinese Hound Dog version currently. Nothing American made.

I wouldn't limit yourself to having Dobro on the headstock, there are some great alternatives out there.

Try resohangout.com. They are squareneck nuts over there.

yes your right, i guess im not eliminating the possibility of something like an appalachian or Paul Beard. But ive always wanted a dobro, and i also like the slothead design with the tuners pointing upwards better. I dont even know any other builders who do slotheads, i guess most people want the solid headstocks

Hard to beat the real thing for certain sounds! This is my '87.

I'd like to get a Scheerhorn someday for an alternate sound. I've had the Model 27 and the Gibson Hound Dog (USA made). My original Dobro, one I bought (traded for) new in 1979, stayed with an ex... Then got trashed in a car wreck with my best friend. I had another D60 somewhere along the line inbetween which got sold during unemployment. I've had the '87 for over a decade now.

You can hear it on this song of mine:

Dandelion Brunette

well i decided to cheap out a little bit

Found this in a thrift shop! $250. Not sure who made it but it does sound very good to my untrained ears. It appears there used to be a small rectangular logo on the headstock, but it has faded and i cant make anything of it. If anyone has an idea of what it is id like to know. Im already playing cripple creek and amazing grace

indeed! im thinking it is a home made instrument. the headstock and neck are sort of misaligned, the tuners are misaligned, the top of the headstock has an un-even arch to it, also the finish is sort of ameaturish and the fretboard is finished over in black. But ill tell you, for my needs, i think it sounds pretty good, and im really enjoying it. May get a beard or a dobro one day but for now this will suffice

While there are plenty of used Dobros around and I'm not currently shopping anyway, I have to say that this peeves me to no end.

My opinion as the owner and lover of many classic Gibson instruments: the modern Gibson corporation is a scourge upon the earth, committed to running their own reputation and that of several legendary instrument makers into the ground for the sake of making junk electric guitars at an exorbitant markup.

Sorry, just had to vent. I feel better now.

I have a McKenna resonator...squareneck. Very good value for the price. They are built by Greg McKenna out of Conneticut.
