Default Silly Q from Mandolin Newbie
Are there mandolins that are strung with pairs of strings that are an octive apart, similar to 12-string guitars?

Not mandolins, they are always in unision. The related Bouzouki typically has octave pairs for the two lower courses and unision pairs for the upper.
