Wren Guitar June 2015: Rio-grain Cocobolo/Lutz
Finally getting to the end of the orders I took back in 2012. I'm a lucky guy to get to work with wood of this quality. Thanks to Jerry at Hibdon and Shane at High Mountain Tonewoods!!!

Looking forward to following this build David. I think I may have the sister set to your Cocobolo

David, do you bend all your sides on a pipe? No forms? What are you using for a heating element?
Looks like great coco... Kevin. |

Hey Tim ... it's beautiful wood isn't it? I really like dealing with the folks at Hibdon!

Hi Kevin ... yep ... I just use an old fashioned hotpipe. I believe it is a refrigerator defroster element (from the '70s). Just after I'd finished high school, a secondary school teacher decided to start a night school course in guitar building. The first Sloane book had just been published, and he had just finished his first guitar using that as a guide. His name was Dan Seminiuk and we became friends. He made this hotpipe for me back then and I've used it for every guitar since. I've definitely led a charmed professional life. I can look around my shop and see so many tools that friends have given me over the years ... my purfling cutting jig from Jean Larrivee ... finger planes from Linda Manzer ... a spray outfit from Grit ... sanding blocks from Douglas Harrison, router bit holder from repairman extraordinaire Scott Shephard, my wooden mallet from Edgar Moench (even a gorgeous OM from my buddy G.W. Barry). I'm a lucky guy for sure.

Another David Wren Masterpiece, off and running! No doubt this will be another brilliant piece of musical and visual art! Looking forward to seeing this one come together. And I'm very appreciative of all the building process photos. It's a treat to watch a Master Craftsman like you, doing what you do. It's both humbling AND inspiring!
I agree with you about Hibdon Hardwoods. They are number-one, A-list wood dealers. Two of the guitars I'm taking to Memphis were built with woods sourced from Hibdon. The Blackwood Rose, and the Katalox "Yucatan" EPC came from there. Best of good fortune with this project, David. Those woods are to die for!

Looking mighty fine already David.
Looks challenging to use that hot pipe, but interesting. Stuart |

Hey Stuart ... it's like everything else ... the more you do it, the easier it gets. That was the great thing working with Larrivee in the early days ... we got to hand-build guitars, but around 5 per week, so we'd get lots of practice bending on a hot pipe!
