Default What radio shows you listened to...

Yeah I know, I'm old. But here's what I listened to as a kid.
Inner Sanctum
Gunsmoke
The Shadow
The Cisco Kid
The Lone Ranger
I'm sure there were more I can't remember

CBS Radio Mystery Theater. Hosted by EG Marshall. We had TV, Atari, etc, but I just loved the radio plays. It was like listening to Twilight Zone. Great stuff.

Also Green Lantern and The Shadow.

When I was a kid in the 60's I didn't listen to whatever there was. These days there are lots of old-time-radio (OTR) stations on internet radio. I've been listening to many of those mentioned but I'm getting hooked on some British shows. Dad's Army, The Clithero Kid, Hancock's Half Hour, Men From the Ministry.

King Biscuit Flower Hour
Dr. Demento
Stories of Pacific Powerland
Paul Harvey News and Commentary

The serials were not on the air that I remember when and where I grew up.

90% of the time listening to the radio is to Howard Stern. I drop in on local programming for traffic only and Pop stations when the kids are with me.

Growing up, I thought rock n roll was all there was on the radio. However I recently discovered a channel on SiriusXM that reruns old time radio mysteries, comedies and dramas from earlier decades. I think it's channel 82 and is hosted by Greg Bell. Gunsmoke, Dragnet, and all the great shows are represented, plus many excellent ones I'd not heard of. Great company on a long road trip.

Before we had a tv I remember listening to local kids radio shows in Seattle, but I can't remember any of the shows names. I remember my parents listening to Amos & Andy, Gunsmoke, The Shadow, and others. But that was mostly at night and I was supposed to be in bed asleep...

This thread is a bit before my time, but it reminds me of a verse from one of my favorite songs:

Well he used to sing me Blood on the Saddle and rock me on his knee
He let me listen to the radio before we got TV
Well, he'd drive to church on Sunday, and he'd take me with him too
Stained glass in every window, hearing aids in every pew

When I was a kid I lived in remote research camps in the Arctic. No phone, no TV, no commercial radio, no papers, etc. I used to pick this up on short-wave, along with BBC World Service and the odd skip transmission from who knows where. Mystery Theatre was about the only thing I actually went looking for.

About the only one I can remember listening to was The Royal Canadian Air Farce - great comedy.

I wrote and produced a few radio dramas in the 90's. A few of them even went to air.

I enjoy the stuff produced by Big Finish Audio, some of their stuff is aired on BBC, but most of it requires a direct subscription with Big Finish.

In my college and postgrad years, “National Lampoon Radio Hour,” Jean Shepherd, and “Firesign Theater.” (Don’t remember much of the latter, due to the, uh, “recreational" state of mind I was in while listening).
