Default Looking for a beater - campfire guitar

Looking for something to take camping this year. Id like something that obviously saounds good, plays good, and isnt too beat up already. I have a budget up to $400 with shipping - Im in NY. Was going to spring the extra and get a GS mini - but Im still not 100% sold on it for the price yet...

Id prefer an OM size body - but would consider a dread.

Id also like a gig bag with it instead of hardshell but will consider both. Also would consider without and case at all.

Thanks all!

Smile How about this...

I have a very nice upgraded Travel-aire. OM size folding axe.

It sounds very good indeed. Much better sound to my ears than any GS mini I have played! Solid Sitka top and laminated Mahogany back and sides.

Unfortunately for me the medium C neck is a bit too big for my small old left hand...

Bought from a great AGFer, on Reverb. I should have checked here! Oops

Original owner only sold due to getting another in all solid woods...

Upgraded with a K&K pup and a tortoise look pick guard, both installed by Harvy Leach himself.

Comes with the very cool semi rigid form fitting backpack.

Amazing how easy and fast it is to fold and unfold, and how well it stays very close to in tune during the process!

Shoot me a PM or email if interested and I will try to find the former listing.

Just as I received it and in excellent, barely used condition

Best on your quest

Paul

Craigslist - more bang for your buck w/o shipping. If you are patient, in your area, you'll find something really nice I bet.

Default Epiphone Masterbilt

Since your open to dreads i would seriously consider that Epiphone Masterbilt that was listed here this morning if you can stretch your budget. I have NO affiliation with that seller but i can tell you they're great guitars. I purchased one several years ago and I have taken it on multiple deployments over to the middle east and it has held up well. Great sounding, comfy solid wood and durable. Cool slope shoulder and sunburst.

Good luck in your hunt!

Yamaha 800 series. Give em test drive at least. IMO, they play and sound better than many guitars double their price.

I used to own that guitar - I bought it as a campfire guitar - but felt it was too nice to subject to camping.

Believe it or not craigslist here kind of sucks. Sometimes good deals come up in NYC. But usually someone has to give me money to brave the traffic or train in to queens, brooklyn or manhattan.

Long island craigslist is usually people looking for top dollar on junk.

Went to store tonight to try some stuff. I never really play the less expensive guitars when I go to the big box stores - I was actually pretty blown away by some of these guitars... When I was a teenager - I don't remember guitars in the 300-500 dollar range sounding all the good.

I played an Alvarez that was incredible for the price....

Anyway -

I have some ideas of what Id be looking at if anyone has anything along these lines let m know

1. Yamaha fg800/830
2. Guild d240
3. Alvarez AD610

I agree, Yamaha FS800. You won't find a better deal IMO.

This would be a nice one.. Alvarez Dread.
All Laminate too ..so no issues with solid wood cracking.

I think a dread is way to go for outside.
Projects better than a small body for singing around the fire..

Hard to beat this one for $196 shipped.

Default Acoustic on the cheap

I recently aquired two acoustic guitars cheap. I found an Epi J-200 VS excellent condition for $220. on Craigs list. Seller wanted more but we negotiated. Also found a Epi IB '64 Texan on ebay for $215. in like new condition. Both sound great. Neither one plays like, sounds like, or looks like a "throwdown" guitar. They are out there if you look around you can get a great deal if you haggle just a little. Good Luck, huckster

I have a VAOM-06, but it would be more than your budget . . . .

I just did a camping trip with my Gretsch Jim Dandy, and it worked great! $169 plus gig bag is hard to beat!
