Norman,
Thanks, nicely done! I play in an instrumental surf music band, with a set list heavy with the Ventures, Dick Dale, Chantays and other first wave bands. I grew up listing to this stuff and never get tired of it.

Every time I hear someone playing surf music it keeps hope alive that this very small genre will survive and draw more new and more interest.

Aloha and Mahalo Norman for your post.

Looks like someone else is versatile. I noticed that you're selling a Les Paul on the forum.

In this day of hyped up marketing, versatile people may not have much of a chance. That was one of the reasons why Eva Cassidy never made it big while she was alive. There was no way that no one in the recording industry didn't recognize her talent... but what to do with it? Eva was all over the place, exploring many genres. She didn't want to be pinned down to one. So she had her way, died in relative obscurity and her music only saw light by pure chance.

Musically, I'm like her. If I would just focus on one thing and become really good at it, then I would have more listeners. Everyone has expectations.

Thanks, Dave. You were so lucky to have a teacher that let you choose your own music. My teacher was actually a violin player who found that it was more lucrative to teach guitar on the side. He headed his own band during The Big Band Era. With him, it was strictly the Mel Bay Guitar Method Books and arrangements that he made.

He would make arrangements of songs like Roses are Red, My Love. The really funny part was all the warnings he had on the paper against copyright infringement. I use to think "who in his right mind would want to steal this?".

I also remembered that he had a Guild Starfire VII. As a total nube to the guitar, I adored it. That's probably the reason why I bought a Guild D-40 when I finally started working.

Thanks for listening.... appreciate that

I think so. What better common ground for us to meet?

These songs are like musical time capsules for us. They take us to a place filled with memories.

Glad to meet you! You're right about how music fades into obscurity. Everything seems to have a Golden Age, then comes the decline. For some reason I always think of the Roman Empire. Surf music deserves to survive! Everything about it is positive. Playing it is also an experience you don't want to miss. Depending on the song, quite a power trip and that energy fills the room.

Tahitijack, I'm trying to get an idea as to what to record next. What are some of the surf tunes that crowds like the most? I'm new on the surf scene, but I am trying to make up for lost time. Also, tell me a bit about your guitar and equipment. Any sort of info is deeply appreciated.

Aloha and Mahalo for your post!

P.S. I can't believe it's snowing outside again. So March is suppose to come in like a lion and leave like a lamb?

Thanks for listening! This thread taught me a lot. I wasn't aware of all The Ventures fans out there.
