If you like the sound, I'd be inclined to the Martins. They will be built better and I think the sound is excellent based on the one I owned. They will also hold more value against any future upgrades.

Martin is made in USA but I wish they had it with binding and a gloss finish. The satin makes me worry.

How much should I be paying for the Martin? Less than $1K?

I would definately go with the Martin just a question of which body size. I have the D-15m but played the 000-15m to I wouldn't have been unhappy with either model but I just liked the dread Sound a little better. Try Maurys music for pricing it's less than $1000. I wouldn't worry about the satin finish or lack of bindings. If that really bothers you try LA guitar sales they have some custom models with binding and gloss.

Get a D-16GT, about the same money.

Is the it a gloss top or gloss-everywhere?

Is micarta more akin to rosewood or ebony in terms of $ cost?

For all the Martin guitars I've mentioned, do they all come with Waverley or Grover tuners?

Do you have any experience playing any of the guitars you are asking about?
Seems like your worrying more about the features than the guitars themselves I suggest you go to a music store and play some guitars and find out what you like.

Why?

All of the Martin 15 Series are satin finish, so if this is a problem, take them off the list.

The 16 Series - for one - are gloss top, but with satin backs and sides.

Waverly's come only on some very high-end models. Otherwise you get the basic Grover or Gotoh tuners, or whatever Martin ships them with these days.

You can check the 15 specs for the models you're interested in on Martin's web site here: http://www.martinguitar.com/guitars/...series.php?s=5

As noted previously, you should try before you buy.

Something to consider is that an American-made Martin acoustic guitar is the gold-standard of resale. If and when you wish to sell an American-made Martin acoustic guitar, you will get quick responses to your ad. Gibson Acoustic, especially their J-45 and J-200 models, is the other quick-selling acoustic guitar brand for used sales.

Regards,

If you're considering a Martin 16 Series model, I suggest only go for the higher-end Martin 16 Series models if you want an all-solid-wood guitar with all-gloss finish on the top, back and sides! Any 16 Series models with GT in their model designation will have satin-finished back and sides and a Richlite or Micarta fingerboard and bridge.

SpruceTop

Is that factory gloss or did you shine it up?
