My latest lyrics...
This is called Patches on the Heart. The title was thrown out at me at a jam by a lady who said it had been on her mind for years, but she had no ideas on where to take it. She asked me to see what I could do with it. The first three versions drove me nuts, it was a story of death and visiting a grave. I worked it on it for days. Then I decided to take a different approach as I'd never heard the phrase patch on the heart. So I went literal with it in a way. This version wrote itself in a half hour in a hotel room. I sent it to a bluegrass recording artist friend. His comment was "You've just written the next bluegrass standard for the next 50 years". Of course, a lot of that has to do with how they intersperse solos in it. The long lines in the verses actually work perfectly for the chord changes in the same place on every line. A rare feat for me to accomplish.
CHORUS/ sung first Patches on the heart are a big part of livin' They hold us together through life’s heartaches Sadness and loss will always be a given We make it through with whatever it takes Grandma sewed a quilt with a heart made of patches From the clothing that her loved ones wore She could point to any patch and tell their story and Recall the date they went on before I asked her why she would dwell in these memories As in her time she’s said many goodbyes She got a look on her face as if angels were around her And I saw a tear come to her bright green eyes She said. (CHORUS) She pointed to a patch from my grampa’s favorite shirt As memories came of happy childhood days She showed me a patch from my dad’s baby blanket and I Recalled how good he was in so many ways I listened as she relived the good times with so many People I grew up with as a boy She gave me the quilt made with loving hands and said Hold everyone in your heart with joy (Bridge) Grandma left us soon on a sorrowful day I held the quilt remembering when last we spoke A patch from the dress she wore in the center lay I saw it for the first time as my heart broke (CH then Tag) (TAG) I think of her often & things she used to say Patches on my heart hold her with me everyday |

Looks pretty good. I'd like to hear it attached to a melody so I can get a better feel for it, but I like what I see! It does have a very classic bluegrass style about it.

Very nice, Dave. I can hear a melody in my own head when I read it and hear a bluegrass or old timey feel to the melody and rhythm. Thanks for sharing.

Not bad at all.
Now all you need is a persona and a sound that everybody likes and hasn't been done before. Not bad at all though. Keep it up.

Here is the raw recording. No solo breaks or harmony voice on the chorus yet. I'd like to add I had raging bronchitis and a sore throat when I did this. I sent it to a friend who is a bluegrass artist. His comment was "lyric writing doesn't get any better than this. It reminds me of Coat of Many Colors". |
