Very well executed so far. Love the way the burnt symbols are placed. Everything looks wonderful.

Joel does clean work, it even seems to translate into his workshop as well. Not sure if or how this helps in getting great sound out of a guitar, though I do like designs with crisp details.

I was amazed at how much work was involved, I can only imagine the amount of time that has been spent on the details of your current SK build and it just keeps getting better with each post.

David
David, thank-you for your kind words, they are high praise indeed. Joel works hard at his craft and I am happy I can contribute to the AGF by sharing his work with everyone.

Default We're moving along

Well from my postings so far it might seem that progress has been slow. Due to some of the final details that we have been working on, this has delayed finalizing some of the parts, but a lot of the preliminary work is being done.

Here the box is now closed -

And the box being prepped for binding -

We have decided to go with a very simple black Rocklite binding motif to contrast with the busy spalting pattern of the Manchinga; trying for a understated elegance of sorts. Here is the full shot of the back -

For the top, we have added a Mahogany/Rocklite Purfling to the binding to match up with what was used in the rosette -

I'm very pleased with Joel's new shape for his OO-R. I find the new updated modern curves pleasing to the eye with the "busyness" of the Manchinga spalting pattern. Maybe not for everyone, but for this build and more modern features, it works well for me. I know that sound should be paramount, yet I can't help smiling to myself when a feature looks good to my eye.

More pictures of the body details to follow.

Here are more detailed shots of the body -

One of my favourite pictures showing off the back transitioning into the lower bout corner -

A similar view, but from the top side. You can now see the Mahogany Purfling detail on the top. It's so subtle, you will have to be up close to see it. There seems to be very little runout on the top at the centre joint, which is my preference. I know that it doesn't seem to make any difference in the sound, yet I find it visually distracting to my mind.

Just love the camera angle on these two shots -

As you can see from these pictures, the Endgraft is still not installed, which is one of the details we are still working on. More from a dimensional standpoint then conceptually. As nice as the Manchinga looks it is hard to instal some of the visual details that Joel has normally employed on his other builds. There has been a lot of discussions between Joel and I on these features, as simple as they may seem from the final choices. One interesting fact I have noted on this build, it is not so much what we added as it was what we decided not to do. Working with a material that has a large single pattern is harder than I had expected. Kudos to Mark Hatcher for the excellent work on his recent Italian Olivewood build to create such a coherent design.

Ian your build is looking amazing! If it's not yet off to the finisher, I might have a chance to see it as I'm meeting Joel in Calgary later today!

I love the rocklite stuff. Are you going with it for your fretboard? The rocklite is uniformly black and it sparkles subtly under the sun. I tried to capture it in this photo but it's more obvious in person.

Marcus, you will indeed get a chance to see my guitar. Please post your impressions when you get some time

The Fretboard and Bridge will both be Rocklite, I think this will be Joel's first Bridge in this material. We have eliminated all the Ebony from the build.

Default Teaser pics from Joel

As has been mentioned by others, Joel is a fun guy to work with. He's lighthearted, doesn't let stuff get him down, and has a good sense of humour. He likes to tease me with little shots here and there, almost like what was happening on Marcus' last build ... then I'll get a flurry of finished pics. I haven't really asked for "in process" pics so likely you will not see too many in this thread.

This was a pic of a mockup of Mahogany, Maple and Sapele Purfling early in the build against the side set. The Maple was too bright, and the Sapele too dark, and the Mahogany was just right -

Here Joel has provided a "wet" image of the rosette and back showing off some of the expected colouring of the Manchinga and Adi together -

This is the latest pic of things to come -

Smile More pics

I now have an Endgraft in place, here it is rough sanded -

And, wetted -

We looked at inserting the Manchinga but felt it looked too busy together with the sides. We had also looked at a simple black line, but that looked too stark. This seemed to be the happy medium between the two with a Manhogany Purfling line outlining the Rocklite wedge.

I also have a pic of the finished Headplate, curtesy of our own Marcus Wong -

Hopefully when he gets back home he will post up about his visit to Joel's shop and his impressions of my build

Love the decision on the endgraft. Looks really nice!

Been said before but the Manchinga has that something that draws you in. I am looking forward to your impressions when you get it.
