So You Want To Be A Rock and Roll Star (cover) by the Byrds
https://youtu.be/LXcGz2Q_mLk This song is a satire about manufactured bands back in about 1966. It was written in 1966 and released in 1967. The song makes it seem as if it's easy to make it in the music business, and of course, it's not. Many will remember Tom Petty doing this song as well as the Byrds. I had fun with my Rickenbacker 360 12-string on this song. I also had fun with the Byrds' harmony, particularly the 3-part vocals in the 3rd verse. I doubled each of the vocal parts to get a vocal sound a little more like the Byrds. The doubling was not done electronically, but by actually singing each part twice. I hope all are well out there -- thank you for listening! - Glenn

GREAT Work!
Glen, beautiful job sounds GREAT! IMO Doubling vocals (the old fashioned way?) by actually sing them is perfect for Byrds covers. Just really a fine job, thank you.

I very much appreciate your kind words! I'm so glad you thought this came out well! It sure is short -- like 2:19 or so! You probably noticed that I left out the screaming girls in my recording. I always found the screaming girls on the Byrds original recording to be rather irritating, but I still loved the song! Thanks so much! I hope all is well for you! - Glenn

I wasn't really sure I was going to like how this song came out until I was able to add the harmony background vocals. To me, the vocals make this song along with that intro with the Ric electric 12-string. I hope you are well, Buzz! Take care! - Glenn

This effort deserves to be viewed over and over and over again. One of the best sounding recordings I’ve ever heard you do, GlennWillow! You have to be proud of this.

Your comments are greatly appreciated! I bought the Rickenbacker 360-12 back in the mid-to-late 90s and also picked up that Carvin bass during that time, too. I never learned to play that bass until I started making YouTube videos in the last 6 years, so the bass exposure has been fun and a learning experience. And I always appreciate a chance to play the Ric 12-string. I am a longtime Byrds and Beatles fan. I hope you have a great new year coming your way, Bill! Thanks so much for taking time to listen and comment! - Glenn

I really appreciate your kind words! I think having the vocals way up front helps with the quality of the sound. I think the overall sound comes out clearer that way. I spent some trying to figure out how Roger McGuinn got his 12-string sound out of his Rickenbacker on his original recording, but I never quite got there. I tried a flat pick, I tried finger picks, I tried different amps and amp models -- I just could not make my Ric 12-string sound quite like his. So, I just kind of gave up and accepted what I got, which still sounds good, just different. This was a fun song to do. I spent 2 weeks working on a different song and just gave up in frustration. So I picked up this song because I thought I might be able to make this one sound like I wanted it to. So thank you Frank! I really appreciate your kind and encouraging words! I hope all is well at your house and that you have a great new year coming your way! - Glenn

Thank you Sal!
You put a big smile on my face with your kind comments! Very much appreciated! There really is something very appealing in the sound of a Rickenbacker 12-string! I feel very fortunate to have this guitar! Thank you Sal! I hope all is well at your house! - Glenn

Hey, that was special. Old Byrds tune.
Great production. All the vocals, with a Rickenbacker, and I'm assuming your Carvin bass. The sound was great. Yeah, I remember the screaming girls thing, too. Thanks for sharing. |

Wonderful, Glenn! Another one "out of the ballpark"!!
For some reason I missed this song way back then......I think I was too wrapped up in "Cherish" as I hit my college dorm room that fall/ winter/spring of '66-67! Thanks for bringing this one through for AGF!!! And...Happy New Year!
