I snagged this from a colleague on Facebook, but have been there many times before. It's that "I've got my act together" attitude (while admitting I don't) and the smiley threat that failure to succeed, which will probably be their fault, will be visited upon the engineer and studio.

When I was a young engineer and needed experience and a track record I took these gigs. These days I'll talk to them, give them the plain facts, and state my terms. If they really want my services and can afford me, great. Otherwise... Well, its good to to be full time already.

Hehehe... For years it was the practice of recording studios to hold the master tapes until the bill was paid in full. It is a cool little leverage that works with nearly everyone. Biker bands can be rough. These days you just make sure that the "listening tapes" are low rez. You've heard of band's master tapes disappearing in the mists of time and then showing back up years later on eBay? How about songs being leaked to the Internet before the official release date? I immediately suspect that someone didn't get paid.

Really ? wonder what exactly they are smokin' at their church, as it surely doesn't appear to be the reality pipe.

Um, don't be distracted by the church connection. It's more of a musician disease.

There's a guy on YouTube that is an engineer/producer/studio owner that has posted multiple videos in which he shares communications he's had from musicians, and they are hilarious. I think there are many musicians who see themselves as having answered a higher calling and are therefore entitled to free or reduced rate goods and services.

Hi Bob…

Isn't it?

When I owned/ran a small studio it was amazing how many players/writers only had a dozen songs, and each was 3 minutes long, so they assumed they'd show up and knock them out in two takes each.

And they assumed I'd have them mixed down and mastered in a day (and it was my part-time job).

It was a delicate balance to help them realize they were under-practiced, and that a song a night was making good time (in 3 hours).

Not everybody had as edgy an attitude as your original post portrays, but some did.

I enjoyed seeing this show up again (it's been on FaceBook several times lately in my news-feed).

Would've been great exposure though, once they hit the big time.
