Default mixer with multichannel record output

I started out using a mixer for live playing and could output left/right via USB for recording. I could fake this to be a dual channel recording setup. But I wanted to record 4 distinct channels and post process so I switched to a 4 channel USB audio interface so we could record 4 live tracks on the laptop. I thought this cold be used for live playing as well. What I've found is because of processing delays causing slight echoes it's not realistic to use this setup for live mixing. So I'm wondering if anyone can recommend an 4 o 8 channel mixer that also digitizes and output all the channels via USB to the laptop. But also be a full front end mixer would also work for live playing.

I hope this question makes sense.
thanks

Many/most audio interfaces provide a means for 'direct monitoring' of mixes. This direct monitoring mix does not go through the USB/computer, so you don't have latency issues.

What interface are you using?

Chuck, i'm using a Tascam US 4X4. I can monitor what were playing but with no mixer capability. The mixing seems to be all post record. So can't play with balance or eq or anything like that when live.

oh yea...Chuck...am using an old version of Sonar that came with the Tascam. What I'd really like to do is use Audacity but I don't want to recompile it for ASIO every time an update comes out

An audio interface like the Focusrite 18i8 has a built in mixer that can be used with direct monitoring. A quick look at your tascam interface seems to indicate it has direct monitoring, but I didn't see any reference to an internal mixer that you could you use for live mixing of all your channels.

Hello ChuckS :

I get the same thing going with my Scarlett 6i6 . I pump into it a
  • T.C. Helicon Voice Live 3 X
  • Roland GR33 guitar synth module
I mix the vocal - synth - guitar in the T.C.Helicon VL3X's FX
I monitor the sound through one of the 6i6's headphone out to my P.A.
I have one headphone to a headset and another from the VL3X giving me
3 headphone monitoring capability .

Saves me a lot of work not hauling a 12 channel mixer for a solo show
I love today's technology a whole lot . I use this into my computer too , it works out
nicely using the T.C. Helicon VL3X's FX in front of the computer cpu through the
6i6 and then into the computer ..

EZ :

Hello dadio917 :

I go into my Focusrite 6i6 Scarlett with FX - you could try that approach
I'm using my T.C.Helicon VL3X XLR/TRS out's / Midi in-out /& because
I learn this could be done I also found that the SPDIF in/outs on the Scarlett
can float a FX engine/Compressor/Exprander before the P.A. and or computer .

Move up to the xr18 and you have an 18 track interface instead of the stereo recorder

Depends on your budget of course BUT Given you stated criteria ..... Very hard to beat this mixer for the price point w/ multi USB out, and possibly an upgrade (pre wise) to your current mixer ?

ok,
how does the soundcraft mixer transfer tracks to a computer for recording? ASIO? Does it transfer all 12 tracks simultaneously? How about loopback from stores tracks? Latency?

and on the livetrak...it records onto its own flash drive, right? How doe that get input into a computer DAW after recording? Or will it also record into a computer via ASIO or some other format?

just tryin to learn. Hopefully my questions and your answers will help other idiots like me:-)

Dont have one personally just know the Ghost Pre's are nice
As I said it is Multi USB out, 12 out, so one would assume yes, 12 simultaneously
