Unabashed fan of the Blackstar HT5R combo here. I put NOS tubes and a Greenback speaker in it and it sounds utterly fantastic. It's small and light and still sounds huge. Also, Blackstar's speaker emulation is the best I've ever heard--much better than the Cab Clone in my Mesa Boogie V:35 and I'm gaga over that amp, too.

Might be worth checking out a Jet City Custom 5 - I have one and it is a fine amp with a range of tones from clean to gritty to full overdrive.
But I mostly bounce between a Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 5 and a Peavey Classic 20 micro head set at 1 or 5 watts for low volume playing. They have rather different tonalities - the H&K uses the same 12HB7 tube that the Blackstar 5 uses and it to my ear is a very open/airy and almost "hifi" tone - the Peavey is a dual EL84 and is slightly darker but perhaps a little richer. I am quite fond of the Peavey - if you can find one at a fair price (I got mine used) it really brings a lot to the table and set to 20 watts with a 1x12 it is plenty loud - but tames very nicely. Of amps I've played and that seem to be available in the general price point you're exploring I'll add my vote to the Blackstar HT5. More gain than you likely want but the cleans are quite nice.
