UMGF: slow or exclusive?
Yesterday afternoon I decided to join the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum in order to reply to the post shown below. Someone there had asked about Fylde guitars - twice - and had received no responses.
The whole "Yuku" registration process was an odd and intrusive diversion, ending with a three-minute video about subway noise. Then, back at UMGF with my new user name, I found out that new user posts must be previewed and approved. I submitted my post there over 24 hours ago. Of course this is not urgent, but I am surprised because I have really enjoyed following that forum and it has always seemed very well-run. My eventual user name over there is Ohbrother. As I write this, it occurs to me that, just like I did with semolinapilchARD , I managed to misspell my moniker: The Coen brothers didn't use an "h" in O Brother Where Art Thou... sigh. All this was just to tell some dude that Robyn Hitchcock plays a Fylde guitar and show a youtube clip of an awesome performance of his "Glass Hotel" from Jonathan Demme's film "Storefront Hitchcock": Tried to contribute!

Mike, here's a link that details the process of joining the UMGF. We do approve every new member individually. Since we've started that, we've cut spammers joining to almost zero. As the link says, our goal is to review applicants at least once a week, more often when possible.

Thanks Todd, very appreciated. I will wait for my message.
It might be helpful to include a comment that the process could as long as a week.

I agree that the whole Yuku process is a pita, and iirc, the process in joining umgf is not swift. Well worth the wait though.

When I joined it took a while to finally be "approved." Maybe ten days. Never been through such a long process on other forums. The good news? It's well worth the wait. Some great, knowledgable folks on that forum.

Talk about exclusive. . . I couldn't believe they sent a guy round to check I'd got a Martin.

When I hit the "Reply" button some text appeared. This is where the info you mention in the FAQ would make the most impact.
Still waiting btw, one week later in about 3 hours. Thankfully several other folks have since chimed in to praise Fylde guitars. It's a great forum.

I just realized a message had been waiting for me UMGF since 8/16.
(I had been monitoring the original thread for my proposed reply to appear.) Not my smartest moment , but I thought I'd better do the right thing over here so that folks would know that there was some user error on my part. Anyway, thanks to the UMGF folks, I have happily and succesfully made my first post as ohbrother.

I'm the dude you sent the video of Robyn Hitchcock to, and I'm very sorry for all the inconvenience it lead to! But it was a great performance of a great song!
Thanks, John |
