Default If you wondered what happened to Harman Kardon

Who knew? Quite a journey.

Interesting... I remember Harman Kardon. They made some pretty good audio equipment.

My dad had Harman Kardon Hi Fi gear in 1960.
I remember the tubes glowing in our darkened living room while we listened to a scary radio program called, "The Shadow".

"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?"

"... The SHADOW Knows!"

I have a Harman Kardon Onyx bluetooth speaker that's really nice for a fairly cheap bluetooth speaker. I got on older version on closeout for $70:

Has a surprising number of drivers for a portable speaker.

I actually have a pair of Harman Kardon computer speakers from the 90’s that still work.

Interesting way to reinvent their business. It reminds me of Resaerch In Motion, the Blackberry folks - they are reinventing themselves as a software provider for autonomous vehicles.

And how they got there: As of 2003 they were custom-designing some of most sophisticated bespoke auto stereo systems in the world:

In the case of the MINI system, what H-K didn't do was put out an owner's manual. I was forced to retro-engineer a manual. I then published it to the Internet in 2003 to help other users to operate their systems.

About half of the nav/infotainment systems in today's cars come from them.

Pretty much only two manufacturers left making them. There has been a lot of consolidation as mentioned in the article.

The HK Citation vacuum tube stereo amps are highly sought after. A really nice one will set you back the price of a fine acoustic.

I had a nice HK integrated amp back in the early '80s IIRC. They made some stellar gear back in the day.

An old friend of mine was designing (engineering, not looks, well, perhaps that, too) a new line of Citation products in the late '80s that was going to really be SOTA but Harman/JBL pulled the plug on it, unfortunately.
