I remember seeing Coryell on the English "Old Grey Whistle Test" music programme in the early 80s accompanying John McLaughlin and Paco de Lucia. Much of it seemed like a series of lightning fast but rather tuneless lead runs, with Coryell and McLaughlin both playing Ovations. There was one piece of his, though, that I thought utterly remarkable. It was a solo acoustic guitar version of The Sea and Sinbad's Ship from Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade. It was wonderful.

I saw him several times in the early 80s while in college in Philadelphia. He was always brilliant and a little cocky. This video pretty much captures the flash, the flare and brilliance of Larry Coryell. https://youtu.be/WMPkkZX2F8Y

So sorry to hear of that!
Larry's music meant a lot to me back in the '70s and '80s. I met him at the Exit-Inn in Nashville, where I photographed his appearance with Lenny Breau. Larry was very appreciative of those prints.
I owned a half-dozen of his albums, but none of them satisfied me as much as the first I picked on a whim: The Restful Mind. Larry was basically sitting in with Oregon for this album, and the result was sublime. Somewhere there must be an easily accessible version of Larry's take on "Pavane for a Dead Princess," a solo masterpiece. |

RIP and thanks for the music.
Mr. Coryell played back in a fervent musical time that I was lucky to hear in person. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rhE-LXGOCmE ... and he played well in the 21rst century too! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NrdA5Asu4Ec Last edited by tippy5; 02-21-2017 at 01:02 AM. |

I met him in an airport in Florida, he was carrying two acoustic guitars I offered to carry one for him😉. We talked about different instruments, he thought that it was cool that I played gigs using an Azola baby bass. RIP.

Years ago, Guitar Player magazine put out an album (vinyl... I said it was years ago...) that was a compilation of top players.
Coryell did "Autumn In New York".... Laying down both the lead track and the comping... One after the other. He also threw in marvelous little "traffic sounds"..... I still get his stuff on my Pandora feed. |

One of my favourite players though I never aspired to play any of his stuff. He was way too young to leave us...

The Restful Mind
Here's that classic Coryell album I recommend with all my heart and soul, including that Ravel piece, "Pavane." Listen closely for the most perfectly timed breath I've ever heard as part of a guitar performance!
Also check out "Ann Arbor," which begins as Bluegrass and speeds on into uncharted territory. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=99mD...5GlEbew8WU-xCt Last edited by Birdbrain; 02-21-2017 at 02:22 PM. |
