Ovangkol vs Rosewood
Which tonewood would you prefer? Ovangkol or rosewood? Also, share a little of your preference!

I voted Ovangkol
but I voted before thinking it through I like Ovangkol better than East Indian Rosewood not Brazilian Rosewood Because Ovangkol is more colorful than EIR and to me in my humble opinion but sound very simular but with a little more mids than EIR But Brazilian Rosewood is breath taking in looks and sound |

To my ear ovangkol is brighter (more crisp) and lacks the warmth of rosewood; so I prefer rosewood.

I've heard a number of guitars in both woods and, in terms of tone, I've sometimes preferred the EIR and others the ovangkol. Visually, I prefer ovangkol, and it is also cheaper. However, makers like Martin and Taylor very often use ovangkol on their lower grade models, so the workmanship and materials may also be inferior. In terms of re-sale value, rosewood would also definitely have the edge.
So, I think I'd have to go on a guitar by guitar basis, and think about my circumstances and wants at the time of buying. |

The materials may be less costly but Martin builds to only one quality standard and I'm sure that's the policy at Taylor, also. Bud

I love the warmth and depth of rosewood, so that got my vote. Don't get me wrong, Ovangkol is really nice too, and I wouldn't mind someone throwing a 414 my way.

I really love the sound of Rosewood on a Taylor. Great depth of sound and really beautiful tone. I have not been as impressed with the Ovangkol guitars that I've played. I'm guessing it mainly has to do with Taylor not using their new bracing on the ovangkol models more than anything. I would say that I do prefer the look of ovangkol over the rosewood as you can get some great and wild combinations (which would look much better with a gloss finish) that scream coolness!

Depends what you like soundwise.
Ovangkol is much brighter sounding than Rosewood to my ears, while rosewood is fuller sounding.

It really depends on the builder, design, and execution of the build (not to mention top wood). |

I didn't vote in the poll, for the simple reason that I like them both. It's like saying: "Chicken or steak - which is better?"
Depends on what I feel like eating for dinner that evening! I don't happen to own any ovangkol instruments, simply because until Taylor started using it ten or fifteen years ago it was an extremely uncommon tonewood for musical instruments. I've just never happened to buy an ovangkol guitar, though I did have the use of an all-solid wood ovangkol Washburn Timber Ridge dreadnought for a while in the early 1980's. Since then I have played plenty of ovangkol instruments made by Taylor, Martin, and others, and I've always liked it. More than once when I've played a selection of Taylor guitars at a Taylor dealership, the humble ovangkol guitar is the one I've ended up liking the most. Wade Hampton Miller |

I prefer rosewood, but I have played some really good ovangkol guitars too.

This! I hated the 400 series, could not sell it fast enough.

the bracing, neck joint and trim are different on the lower end models, but the workmanship is the same.
