Smile New 320CE-L10 vs 714CE

Well, my 320CE-L10 arrived Thursday. It looks and handles as expected from a Taylor. The sound is clear and bright, with a little less bass than I would have expected. Might this change as the guitar 'opens up'? Also, I A/B'd it with my (less than one-year-old) 714CE (cedar top). Either the cedar is shouting or the koa is whispering. Quite the difference in level. Overall I am pleased. I'll just start playing the %^* out of it and see what happens. BTW, I purchased it from geartree.com Good outfit to deal with...SSZ

I've had my 320L10 for a couple of weeks now and it is sounding great. Mine actually has more base than I expected, could be a difference in the wood tone quality, or just that my expectations were a bit lower... either way gotta say that I love that geetarh.
Aloha

I definitely think koa shines better on the smaller body, fingerpicking guitars. I owned a 410K for a while and was very under-whelmed with the tone and volume -- soft and muddy to me. However, I played a cedar-topped K14 once that had the most angelic sound I've heard on a guitar.

Hopefully, your 320 will develop a sound and volume you like -- you probably wouldn't want it to sound like your 714, since you have one of those!!

Have you tried the new PB Elixirs on your 320? That might give you a little deeper flavor . . .

My cedar 714 is also very loud for a smaller bodied guitar. I've played it side by side with a friend's 510 and they are equally as loud. He uses medium strings too.

I'm not sure if the PBs will give you more bass. On my guitar I thought the bass was reduced or mellowed with the PBs. The sound was less bright, and very smooth. It's worth a try. You should also think about a new saddle. My bone saddle gave my low end more punch.

For the same amount of effort, koa will be quieter than rosewood/cedar. To get the best out of koa, you need to bear down. Thump those strings like you want to be heard in the 40th row, as my guitar instructor keeps telling me.

IMHO. YMMV. plus shipping and handling. Batteries not included.

From my experience, koa takes quite a while to open up. Granted my experience is with smaller bodied koa guitars (2 GCs), I would think the same would hold true with a dread. My JDCM took a good year to become less tight and develop more volume and bass. I have and continue to thoroughly enjoy experiencing the tonal journey of my all sweet all koa guitar. It continues to be my favorite.

Congratulations and enjoy your new guitar!

MAKE it a GREAT day!!!

My JD has opened up greatly in the past few months also. The base has a ways to go, but it has a tone all its own. I would have to agree with James Goodall that an all koa guitar is great for jazz.
