Frary don't sell guitars anymore, must not have been a big enough market to keep afloat.

Don't know too much about classical guitars, but, I have bought and sold 4 of them and ended up with a Prudencio Saez, made in Spain which I would highly recommend.

I would just like to encourage you, with all the experience you have, to build one for yourself. You can buy one in the interim and then if it takes you two years to do it well, that's ok too. But after all those years building guitars I think you deserve one of your own

Stopped-in to Bounty Music on Maui when I was there 10 years ago (this week) for my honeymoon. Bought my first uke from them and I remember them having some nice, handmade koa ukes on the wall. But I don't recall what they had for guitars.

This is another typically well regarded maker. It was one of my top picks when I wound up with the Camps Primera.

For that price I would look into a Picado. I'm not sure you would find a shop in Hawaii to sell you one. I know of a shop in Philadelphia that carries a few models ranging in price from about $1500to about $3500.

Default Mahalo A Nui, Friends!

Aloha Friends,

After reviewing all of your suggestions & doing some homework, I've decided to try & make my own nylon string guitar after all. A friend has loaned me his '68 Ramirez to play in the meantime for a little while.

I don't think Port Orford Cedar is what I need either. And I still have a few sets of 85 y.o., even-grained, lots of lace German Spruce (got it in Germany over 40 years ago) & dead-quartered, brick-red Brazilian RW that I got from Lewis/LMI's Hart Huttig in the mid-70's (I think I paid $128/per set, Ha!) So I think it's time that I should use what I've been taking care of for so long, right? Haven't made a classical using those woods since '86. Get those scrapers sharp, alohachris! And just hope my hands hold up.

I want to thank each of you for your thoughts & suggestions in helping me get into a nylon string guitar. I learned a lot in the process & got a lot of info from the links you shared with me. Very grateful for your contributions.

Now, I've gotta get out my old classical drawings & plans & try to remember the classical-building process vs. the steel string process. I'm setting up my shop again. And also, I need work on my right hand technique (mine is sloppy & angled from 53 years of gigging on steel-strings).

Aren't guitars a GAS, guys! Oh, it never ends. It never ends.

Again, thanks for everything!

Mahalo a nui,

alohachris

How about Kremona / Orpheus Valley Guitars. I just picked up, used, a Sofia SC.
Cedar top, Sapele sides and back. All solid woods and very light.

Sounds like you've made the decision that will leave you happiest and most satisfied! Can't wait to follow the build thread on here (no pressure, but a bit of a nudge maybe

Good luck and congratulations well in advance!

I hope your build turns out great. That's something I've always wanted to try.

For future readers of this thread, I thought I'd respond to your mentioning that you didn't want an Asia-made guitar. If you could get over that aversion, you could look into Kenny Hill's New World Player classicals. Mr. Hill says that when he wanted to provide a less expensive version of his custom guitars, he looked at Spanish builders and did not like the quality of what he saw. He decided to produce in China and personally trained the builders. I believe that Hill does the setups here in the States.

Their most expensive Player has an elevated fretboard and side soundport and runs around $2400.00.

I purchased a Player several years ago and just love it. I upgraded the tuning machines to Sloanes and added an Baggs Anthem pickup myself. Doing that would still produce a price below your target.

But ... there don't appear to be any dealers in Hawaii.

I really like my Esteve. Very rich tone and made in Spain.
