Please do, because I've acquired a severe case of it also...having four of these soundboard sets myself.

Just wanted to mention, I finally have some clear space to go to town on the Petros Dwende top purfling, and the multi-line rosewood side and back purflings, with the Lignum Vitae bindings. Dressing up the box! I'm really diggin' the process. The Lignum is the perfect complement for the Ancient Sitka and the Bois de Rose. The color and figure really tie the whole thing together.

I was happily surprised to find that the Lignum bends like a dream. Very compliant stuff. After I bend a course of binding, I wipe it down real good with acetone. The heat from the bending iron causes the resins to boil up to the surface, and the acetone, cleans everything up and makes the Lignum glue-able with regular FG glue.
I had to test this out first; knowing that Lignum has a waxy nature, and it can be a little problematic with some glues. The acetone rubdown does the trick, though. The gluing test indicates it will never come un-stuck.

We'll post a new round of photos as soon as the binding work is done. I know this guitar is a different kind of "exotic"; and may not be everybody's cup of tea, visually- but I'm just grinning like an idiot about it! I think this is going to be one of the coolest guitars I've ever had the pleasure to be involved with.

By the way, I could stop right here, and the sound box would be a super-responsive, well-tuned percussion instrument. That ancient Sitka top really delivers the goods!

Default The body is complete

Steve has now completed the box and is beginning work on the neck and fretboard.
Please note that the Lignum bindings will be green/brown, not the yellow-orange color as they appear in the pictures! The Lignum is freshly cut and will pretty quickly oxidize to a stable green/brown mix of colors.
Steve added spirits to the entire body to show a more accurate picture of the final appearance.
I think it looks terrific so far, although I'm sure it looks much better in person.

Default Neck Construction

Steve decided to use laminates of maple/bubinga/maple on the Indian rosewood neck.

Default Work-in-progress neck/fretboard/headstock assembly

The front headstock has Bois de Rose with a maple-bordered Lignum Vitae wedge, with black MOP logo circled with sterling silver. Pretty sick!

I think you're on to something here...

Steve continues to blow my mind with this thing.

Just have to say, Steve is doing a great job on this beauty. I really like the whole neck and headstock construct. It is really going to be amazing when finished.

I had the opportunity to spend a couple of days in the shop with Steve last week, and I thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Steve showed me his technique for laying out and slotting multi-scale fretboards...a method that is amazingly simple, yet truly ingenious. The body had already been assembled and bound prior to my arrival, so I was able to really get a good idea of what this guitar is going to look like when it's complete, and as beautiful as it already is, I can't wait to see this little beauty underneath a finish... she's going to look amazing.

There was a moment where I rested the body on my shoulder with the sound hole up to my ear, and then tapped on the back of the guitar. As I did this, Steve was grinning like a cat holding a canary in its mouth because he knew what I was experiencing in that moment was very amazing. The best way that I can describe it is this...

Put the palms of your hands over your ears and then talk. It adds a depth of sound that you don't hear in normal conversation...almost as if it were an added dimension of sound.

It was amazingly full and vibrant!!! This assembly of tonewoods has the potential to produce one of the most incredible voices that I've ever experienced in a guitar. I realize that the Bois De Rose, in and of itself, is an incredible tonewood, and Steve could take it and build an amazing guitar, no matter the choice of soundboard; But this Ancient Sitka brings even more to the equation than I had ever dreamed that it would. The unique historical element that it offers is enough to be fascinating, even if it sounded no different than ordinary Sitka...but the sonic properties of this soundboard are very, very special.

Thank you, Steve, for the opportunity, experience...and especially for the friendship.

Joel

Thanks, Tom. Looks like you've got something special coming from Mr. Hatcher! That Koa looks great!

Woodknot, your comments about the sound coming out of the guitar body are getting me really excited about this project. Previously, Steve made similar comments, so now there are two of you who agree that it appears to have great tonal potential. I'm trying not to let my expectations get too high because I see the Ancient Sitka as a "wild card", but this confirmation from the two of you is very encouraging!
I'm glad you had the opportunity to visit Steve and learn more from him. Cheers!
