Aftermarket inlay anyone?
Just curious to check out the possibility of this. I'm thinking of doing an aftermarket inlay. How much would something like this cost? It's going to be a partial kid's drawing either on the headstock or on fretboard of a GC8.
Thanks. |

Cost will depend on several factors; material for the inlays, how much artwork must be done to make it ready to cut, material inlaying into (darker, say ebony, is less than lighter, say maple), amount of detail and most importantly... the actual location on the guitar.
Location, location , location...If it's on a headstock an added cost will be refinishing, if it's on a fretboard some frets will need to be pulled and if the fretboard is bound covering more than one fret will add more cost (really tricky to recut the slots). The least expensive place is on the pickguard (unless it's on a Martin where it's glued to the body prior to finish.) On guitars with peel and stick guards I usually just make a whole new one and inlay it. Another cost savings on a PG is that you wouldn't need to send the guitar away. If you want send me a picture of the drawing and where you would like it to go and I can give you a better idea. Harv

It will be a picture that my little girl drew of she and I holding hands. I thought it'd be really cool to put on my guitar somewhere. My GC8 has no pickguard right now, so that might be an option. I'll see if I can get something scanned soon. |

Martin pickguards are glued to the body prior to putting on the finish? Really?
I could swear there have been threads about people removing pickguards from Martin guitars (in some cases replacing them, in other cases not). Also, looking closely at my Martin 000-15 I don't see how the finish could have been put on after the pickguard. (or maybe what you were saying is that this is the case on some Martins?) |

I've looked into this before on an old GC4 I used to own. My own custom design on the headstock (not much bigger or more complicated then the Taylor "cindy" headstock inlay) and having it refinished and all ran about $700-800. I think $400-500 for the inlay and 300 for the refinishing.

This is true in older Martins, such as my 1976 D-35.

Yes, decades ago. Not your current models.

I hired Dave Nichols at Custom Pearl Inlay http://www.custompearlinlay.com/
to do three guitars, all Martin D-15m models, all fretboard inlays. He does amazing work and he is cheap. I had contacted the Martin factory to do the work, and they gave me a six month waiting time AND suggested I call Dave, as he does work for them when they are jammed. That sealed it for me. Check out his site for ideas; I knew what we wanted... My son's surfer dude inlay at about $250 if I remember correctly. My inlays at $50/name if I remember correctly.
