Recording King ROS-06 vs A&L AMI
1) Which has better tone?
2) Are these 000, 00, or Parlor guitars? Interested in 12 frets. (BTW, I got the spruce top A&L Ami a month ago off craigslist for $150) Thanks y'all! Last edited by lespaul_79; 02-13-2011 at 03:11 PM. |

The RO is a 000 size 14-fret, and the AMI is a small parlor 12-fret. Two very different guitars.

my ami has great tone and its a blast to play, you may have meant the ros-06 which is a 12 fret.i have never played the rk. i had been looking at 12 fret guitars on line and then i happened across this little used ami at my favorite guitar shop and within minutes of playing it i knew it was going home with me.the ami has an 1 11/16 nut i think the rk is wider and has a bigger body.i like the looks of the rk,especially the slotted head stock.musicians friend has used or blemished ros-06's you could order one relatively cheap.i don't know about their return policy though.my suggestion would be to go to u-tube and check out some vids.let us know if you buy one and what you think.

Just to clarify - the AMI has a bit wider nut width than 1 11/16" as it is 1.72". The RO's are 1 3/4" nut width and the ROS' are 1 13/16".

Thanks y'all. I ask b/c I just got an AMI for $150 on craigslist. Just wondering what I could get for under $300 that has a little better tone. The AMI ain't bad at all. Just curious if this has better tone.

I have the RO-06 and its sound is wonderful. It is a solid top. A&L does make some that are laminate. I did get my RK for the same price as the used AL but mine was brand new.

My short answer is simply yes -- the ROS-06 will have better tone, unless what you're really after is a parlor. It's not a dread, but it's a full-size 000 with good base response, which is just a different beast from a small parlor. I like my ROS-06 a lot, and when I bought the Ami's cousin (a Seagull Grand) I ended up returning it because it just didn't do it for me, even though it gets good reviews around here and seemed well-made. The sound just wasn't for me.
ADDED: But (echoing bfloyd) do think about the neck, if that's an issue for you. It's 1 13/16", which is pretty substantial. |

Did the OP mean the Recording King ROS-06?

I have owned both...
...and for my tastes/style, prefer the ROS-06. I think the A&L is more of a true parlor as is is not as wide as the RK in the lower bout. AMI was a little neck heavy as it was a 14 fret to the body, not a slot head, and a little wider. The RK is a 12 fretter and slot head and seemed more appropriately weight balanced.
Tonally, the ROS is more Martin-ish and sounds pretty darned good for the money. I opted for a saddle upgrade and a setup (a few frets were sharp too). while there was nothing wrong with the AMI, it felt more like a toy than the RK. |

Was your AMI an older one? I thought the AMI's were always a 12-fret... newer ones are and have been for as long as I remember. Now, the Seagull Grand is a 14-fret.

Yes, indeed...
...it was a mid to late '90s model. I am pretty sure it was a 14 fretter, but I wouldn't stake my life on it...only owned it for a couple of years. In any event, I prefer the RK (which I currently own), especially considering the "bang for the buck" factor. I have strung it with silk and steels, and work very well for Merle Travis Kentucky thumbstyle tones.
