Cheap nylon strings tend to be awful. Really awful. I'd get something decent, like Savarez, D'Addario or Thomastik-Infeld, and see if it sounds better. Strings are relatively cheap and a consumable. I'd avoid buying strings on ebay unless you know the source (and never from a Chinese seller).

You should have made that clear from the start.
Try some French made 'Savarez' guitar strings.

p.s. The highest priced Valencia on ebay here in Australia is $360.00
The lowest is $16.00.
Yeah, you're right. I should have said 'classical, nylon, etc.. etc...' except that really my question wasn't just about me it was open ended and general, right?

But no worries.

Where's that $16 guitar?

I just bought a $20 piece of crap simply because it was only $20 and to give to the kids in the hopes they might show some interest.

Didn't work.

And I don't blame them, the sound it makes.

And it is even smaller than the 'kids guitar' I got from eBay some time ago for the same purpose and with the same result.

So I'm guessing the $16 thing would be something like that?

Back to the point: so what difference does nylon stringed make? Better chance of better quality making a difference? Or the other way round? Or just the same.
