Default Charis Acoustic Build Thread - Myrtle/Euro Spruce S/N 409

Here is another guitar we are working on that will be available toward the end of the year! The Myrtle reminded us of a warn animal hide, so we "stitched" the back seam.

Isn't the color beautiful?

Adding the stitches

Love the wood! The stitching is a nice touch and looks great.

Default Very nice and conceptually interesting !

Love the stitching and the concept leading to that design detail. Will it carried out elsewhere on the design ? Not necessarily the stitching but the animal skin look/theme ? How so ?

John

I live about 15 miles from the shop and "test drive" most of his new geetars, at least most that aren't headed to a dealer or customer.

I'm also on the verge of a Charis Mahogany dread - was going to start it with this current batch, but had a couple "hiccups" that stopped me for a bit.

Well, It's certainly been an exercise in want vs. need over the last few years.

I WANT every one I play!

We have not decided all the details yet, but the theme will carry at least into the rosette. My daughter Rebecca is thinking about something for the fingerboard and headstock, but nothing solid yet. Anyone have suggestions?

Lovely wood. I also am interested to see it under finish.

I bet a symmetric stitch on the rosette would look fantastic.

Only brain storming here. Brain storming means throwing out ideas without considering their true do-ability or appropriateness, but can't pass on an opportunity to possibly have some influence/input. A rare opportunity I've never seen offered before so here it goes:

For some reason, my associations go to deer skin/buck skin, so I wonder about using antler material for tuners. Antler material in the rosette. Since antler is bone, an antler nut or saddle.

Getting away from the antlers, how about skin in lays in the rosette. Go shoot bambi and use the polka dotted fur for the rosette.

Certainly the stitching design, if shrunk and "sewn" tighter together would make an awesome looking herring bone binding, purfurling or rosette ie "<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<" or ">>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>" or lose the herring bone design for "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx"

If you broaden the concept from animal skin to a hunters guitar (or not), using old gun-barrel metal for frets might be doable.

All of your designs I have seen are very tasteful and exquisite, so you probably don't want to go gaudy, but if you did, using a blood wood or other red colored wood alternating with a light/white wood to make the sound hole a target in appearance. Given your skill, you might even figure out a way to make it look "not gaudy."

Finger board inlay of what ever material of a forest or pastural scene.

Rope binding or purfurling or integrated into rosette.

Time to return to work. These were the easy one's for me but given time may have some more, no matter how ridiculous they may seem.

Thanks for the chance for some input, whether you use it or not, it's fun to think about this stuff as if it was my own guitar.

John
