Default Shaken awake by an earthquake just now...

The shaking went on for quite a while. Within a minute or two of the quake, my cellphone went off with a hideous sound; it was a tsunami warning telling me to get away from the coast and seek higher ground.

We get quakes here all the time, but that’s the first tsunami warning I can ever recall getting.

It turns out that went out all over the state, but the Anchorage Bowl is outside the danger zone. Kodiak, Alaska, however, is not.

I know some people who live in a houseboat within the danger zone, and I’m more than a little concerned about them.

I just saw this on the news. It is being reported as a 7.9! That’s huge, with tsunami warnings all the way down to the WA coast. Good luck to all in the danger zone. And apparently, lucky for you Wade.

Earthquakes are scary to me. I would definitely pay attention to an tsunami warning. God bless

I hope all is well. I just heard that the warnings were canceled...good news.

Makes me wonder how I would handle a situation like this. With a family, just seems like I wouldn't be prepared to leave in a real world emergency.

Time to get together a bug out bag...

Just reading that this morning too.
I hope everything's ok at your place Wade. Good thing the tsunami didn't materialize.

We’re all fine here, thank you. When the quake woke me up it shook the house for quite a while, but not so hard that we had any damage. I thought: “Okay, this isn’t bad here, but it’s bad near the epicenter, wherever that is....”

I’m relieved that the tsunami warning was rescinded. It was still in effect when I wrote the first post.

Ah, life along the Pacific “Ring of Fire” - such fun!

Glad everyone is ok. I remember lots of 'tremors' we used to get when I lived in Ft. Wainwright 1966-70.

Just read that the tsunami was less than a foot high, and no reports of damage from it. Phew!

I’ve been through a few earthquakes in my time. Was about 60 miles from the epicenter of the Sylmar quake in 1971, which also hit before most folks were and was a 6.7. That was scary! So I can only imagine what you and other Alaskans experienced today. Hope there aren’t too many scary aftershocks, and wish you the best, Wade.

Can't imagine what it's like to experience earthquakes on a regular basis since we don't get many here in Virginia. However the 2011 quake centered in Mineral, VA was a doozy.

With an estimated magnitude of 5.8., it, along with a quake on the New York–Ontario border in 1944 and the 2016 earthquake near Pawnee, Oklahoma is tied as the largest to have occurred in the U.S., east of the Rocky Mountains, since an equivalent 1897 quake centered in Giles County in western Virginia.

The quake was felt across more than a dozen U.S. states and in several Canadian provinces, and was felt by more people than any other quake in U.S. history. No deaths and only minor injuries were reported. Minor and moderate damage to buildings was widespread and was estimated by one risk-modeling company at $200 million to $300 million, of which about $100 million was insured.

Curiously, I was in Baltimore watching the dolphin show at the National Aquarium when it struck. I assumed that it was the sooper-dooper 4D show and not an earthquake. What appeared to be the entire city of Baltimore had been vacated to the streets, and I made a beeline for Charlottesville, curiously passing within several miles of the epicenter on my way home...

They just lifted the Tsunami warning here in San Francisco but have advised people to stay clear of the shore today.

I’m glad to hear you were out of the danger zone.
