Default 100 Greatest Acoustic Guitarists

Here is something that should spark some interesting (and hopefully, friendly) debate and discussion: a list of the "100 Greatest Acoustic Guitarists". Allegedly compiled by "knowledgable people and visitors", it offers a rather impressive list of highly talented artists....including 2 of our very own: Larry Pattis and Rick Ruskin! IMHO, both should have been ranked higher, and it is a TRAVESTY that Eric Skye didn't even make the list.

A couple of other players that I enjoy were left off (Chris Proctor, for example). And Tony Rice is ranked 29? Below Will Ackerman??! But, maybe we can use the list as a starting point.

And we can be proud and pleased that the list includes some estimable members of our community.

These things are always entertaining, and of course completely subjective. Like debating who the best centerfielder, best soccer player, best rugby player, etc.

Joni Mitchell was a wonderful singer/songwriter and a creative player, but to state that she is the 50th best acoustic player of all time is a little silly imo.

Thanks for posting this, Rich. It will give me some good listening ideas.

But I can't resist commenting on a few....Jerry Reed at 97? And I would put Huttlinger and Bennett above the 40's, but that's probably because I like their style more than some of the others.

I was looking for John Hurt until I read the disclaimer at the top.

A link to that specific list would be nice.

#44 is a local fella in my neck of the woods who I've known for years; Sam Pacetti... he has toured with Thomas Leeb, but really just kinda hangs out here in St. Augustine Florida and plays some of the local bistros where I perform as well. We've hung out at the local mom n pop music store for some shoptalk n jam.
He is a tastefully gifted player and writer worth checking out.

I also had the oppurtunity to hang out back stage with #56 Greg Carmichael of Acoustic Alchemy, my fav all-time acoustic group, especially during the late Nick Webb era.

Thank you for posting this, I'm sure many greats are left out, yet happy some of our own made the list.

This list is strongly skewed towards fingerstyle guitarists, and appears to be compiled by people whose musical sensibilities were set in concrete in 1988, and who know nothing about flatpicking guitar. Tony Rice #29? Absurd. Peter Rowan ranked above David Grier? Absurd. No Clarence White? Come on. Are they even trying? Bryan Sutton didn't make the list? When was this compiled? No Molly Tuttle? That is ridiculous, unless the list is 3+ years old. Oh wait. This list was last updated in 2016. Still, no Bryan Sutton?

I am glad that Norman Blake received some much deserved recognition, but in general this list is an epic fail.

Do my eyes deceive me or is Richard Thompson nowhere to be found on that list?

As great a guitarist as Blake is I really enjoy his singing too.

Lists are lists.

Profound, eh?

I actually don't think the list is a ranking from 1-100, it's just a list of 100...but I could be wrong on this (of course).

What I can say from here is that it's rather nice to be included on this kind of thing (thanks for finding and posting this, Rich), at any level, and in any position. 9th or 69th, it's nice to be included...and I note that my now-retired former touring buddy El McMeen is listed at number 31. I have several friends and touring partners listed, and it's good to see ol' Tom Long and Tracy Moore on there, too...

Rick Varner seems to be fairly knowledgeable across several genres (or is drawing on knowledgeable sources), and yes, this is primarily a fingerstyle list.

In regards to omissions, well, I just did two shows with Justin King, and he certainly is a *major* talent...as good musically, IMO, as anyone on the list.

Yes, but without the disclaimer at the top referred to in post #4:

which, it turns out, explains some weird omissions. (And some weird inclusions among a "Top 100".)

Two other AGF members on that list immediately come to mind--El McMeen (#31--posts under the name: elmcmeen); and Kenny Sultan (#99--posts under the name: bluesrus).
