Awesome as always Glenn!
BTW what kind of an engineer did you become? I'm an electrical engineer. |

How cool that you are an electrical engineer! Bravo! I became a mechanical engineer, graduated from Purdue University in the spring of 1970. In fact, my wife and I got married on the day of graduation. That anniversary is coming up soon! - Glenn

Very nice! Universale lyrics on this one it seems. Quite a challenging vocal part too? I love the tone of that guitar but have never seen that brand befor, what is it? It looks and sounds great! I love how you always look like you are having a great time.
Keep them coming, Jasper (Oops did not read the description! Now I see your note on the guitar) |

Thanks so much for listening and commenting! I love the tone of this Sheppard guitar, too! Gerald Sheppard is a one-man luthier out in Tennessee who does outstanding work: http://sheppardguitars.com/ The vocal part is only challenging because the guitar part is so busy. In terms of range, Darrell Scott has the same kind of vocal range as I do (or vice versa), essentially a baritone. So I am okay with whatever Darrell sings. I do love all the depth in his voice, however. I do have a good time when I am singing or playing these songs. Music really makes me feel good! I'm betting it makes you feel good, too, since I have also watched you perform some of your pieces! - Glenn

Well played Glenn kudos
I am a total Darrell Scott fan. I had the distinct pleasure of hearing him close up and personal, along with 4 other outstanding Nashville based songwriters, play "in the round" at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, during the Tin Pan South songwriters festival about 8 years ago. I play two of his songs "Never Leave Harlan Alive " and one of his most brilliant songs IMO, in its universality and simplicity (basically 3 chords. repeated throughout the song, capo @ 3 shapes are CGD -C ) "The Open Door"

Thank you very much! And how cool that you play some of Darrell's music. I know both of those songs, but I have never seen that video of "The Open Door" before. He does a similar video on "Never Leave Harlan Alive," and they are both so appealing! Cool! Thank you for introducing me to that! - Glenn

I have been playing this song for a while, so I have had time to work this out. I may have been playing this for 6 or 7 years now. You can make something look easy once you figure out how to do it. And it really helps to really be taken with a song so that a person sticks with it long enough to work out the bugs. I appreciate your comments, Sal! - Glenn

Great stuff Glenn. You are making good use of your retirement! You make it look pretty easy...and we all know that it isn't so easy; as many have said, a lot going on in that song! You have done a really fine job with it: clean, steady, and beautiful.
What's next? |

How nice to hear from you! Thank you for your comments! As I said in the opening post, the song really is a challenge for me. I looked up when I first recorded this in the computer and it was July, 2011. So that's 6 years ago. I don't know how long I messed with this song before I recorded it, but at least a couple of months and probably longer. When I first learned this, it was a challenge to sing on tempo and smoothly with all those left hand changes going on throughout the song. And as Fred pointed out, this business of singing while not looking at my hands is also something that had to be learned. So what you see in a video like this is where a person is after working through all that stuff. The song's not impossible, because I can play it and sing it at the same time. But it does take some effort to get there. There are some songs that I have just given up on; they are just too hard. When they are that frustrating, it just takes the fun out of playing. So there is this fine line between a challenge and a big frustration. I imagine that line moves around for different players, depending on where we are in our guitar playing path. I've been playing pretty seriously for 53 years, and during that time I have always pushed myself to keep learning new things. And now that I am retired, I do have more time for learning. When I was 30-40 years old, raising young children with every moment of the day filled up, I did not have as much time for learning new things on the guitar as I do now. I hope you are doing well Rich. - Glenn
