I think I have the Maui 5 measurement... It's not good and had bad review if I remember well. I have to look for it in my magazine locker.
Of course if they review the JBL eon one or the HK nano 608i, I will post it. Cuki

JBL eon one and Maui 5
Quote:
that's the JBL eon one horizontal dispersion (its weakness): 4dB/line that's the Maui 5 horinzontal dispersion 5dB/line as expected the JBL eon one spectrum is much better. Martingitdave, if you want other measurements from the JBL and comparison with others. Just send me a pm. Cuki

I must point out, however, some challenges in comparing the JBL Eon One against -- for example -- the Maui 5 based on these graphs: The JBL is measured at 0, 15, 30 40, 50 and 65 degrees off-center axis. The Maui is measured at 0, 30, 60 and 90 degrees off-center axis. The vertical axis of JBL graph extend from -28 dB to +16 dB. The vertical axis of Maui graph extend from -15dB to +10 dB. In addition, the Maui is evaluated across a wider frequency range. I DO THINK THIS IS ALL VERY GOOD INFORMATION, and can be useful in understanding the performance of these products. it is also rather easy, however, for someone to become misled by just glancing at the two graphs as a comparison -- as there are significant differences between the measurement angles and scales of these two graphs. My observation. Thanks again for taking the time to post these, Cuki. |

Any Advice on Portable Line Array PAs? (BOSE, etc)
Cuki was able to share some more data with me regarding the Nano, BoseL1C, and Maui. I think copyright probably makes posting all of them inappropriate.
My takeaway from the graphs is that all of the box and stick units have some holes in their frequency response. Every unit has strengths and weaknesses, but are probably fine for our respective use. Whether those holes mean a hill of beans for an acoustic act is another matter. Cuki's advice to me was good. Test them and let your ears be the judge. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

The magazine explains the low mid hole this way:
The hole usually occurs around 300 Hz where the wavelength is around 1m and you are close to the crossover between the woofer and the array (the small speakers). So at this frequency, you will hear sound from the woofer as much as from the array. As they are separate by at least one meter (the woofer ins on the floor), when you put a microphone on a stand for measurement, depending on the distance to the amp the waves coming from the small speakers array and the subwoofer will not be perfectly in phase. In the case of the JBL eon one, where the distance between the array and the woofeer can not be adjusted precisely (only one spacer). At 5m the whole was a bit shifted. At 1m the hole is pretty obvious.

It's just low and highs separate volumes and a main volume. Separate input control volumes too though. Not having mid control hasn't been a problem though since Mids are mostly what comes out of the array and by adding or dropping the highs and lows and using the main volume, it's easy to dial in, especially for acoustic guitar.

A big thanks to Cuki. Info like that is great and should be included in every professional review. But as PG pointed out there are inconsistancies between the testing. Without the text to the review, including the info on how the test was conducted, one must take these wonderful graphs with a grain of salt. They are far from conclusive without the testing proceedures. And thanks again P.P, of all the reviews I have read of the Maui 5 in not only English but in German and French as well I cant recall a single review where someone mentioned a lack of mid range. I may just buy it anyway from someone with a good return policy. I cant find anyone that has one on the showroom floor ready to try out. They are all in a box at a wearhouse ready to be shipped to my door. Thomann does have a 30 day no questions asked policy. But first I need the o.k from the big boss. She's going to make me wait a bit longer. |

One more thing I would like to point out is any time a French/German mag tests out a German/French product the home team and all the other teams from other places wins before that "other" country wins. Not saying thats the case here, but I see it pretty much everywhere else. Not making a real point here, just saying. Its kind of funny I guess.
