Default Tried a new beer - lessons learned

When it comes to beer I really prefer stouts and porters. Guinness is my usual choice but I do like to try others now and then. Well I was in the store the other day mulling things over and a nice young fellow asked if he could help. I explained what I was looking for and he suggested I try Left Handed Brewery Milk Stout - Nitro. I had never had a milk stout, had no idea what it was. So I bought a rack.

What I learned is that milk stouts are really sweet. I found that bizarre and didn't like it one bit. The other thing was that beers carbonated with nitrogen instead of CO2 don't have much fizz to them. I followed the recommend method of pouring. You turn the bottle vertically and drop it all in one quick go. I ended up with a small head and not much fizz. I've since tried drinking it right from the bottle but it wasn't any better.

Well, no more milk stouts for this kid.

IME, Guinness is the only stout that tastes like, well, Guinness. Enough to where I'd call it it's own type of beer really.

Many Stouts have a bit of sweetness, along with hints of chocolate, coffee, etc. But few of them taste like a Guinness.

I love a good stout (and I do like Left Hand's Milk Stout) but when I want a Guinness, only a Guinness will do.

I'm kind of a beer snob that likes and can appreciate most varieties. I have my favorites but I always like to try something new. To me, Guinness is kind of bland without much there. Like mr. Beaumont, there are times that it's exactly what I'm looking for.

Keep trying different beers. Go to beer tastings, buy singles, etc. It's all part of the fun!

Yep, Guinness is pretty much in a class of it's own. Not many others similar although Murphy's is pretty close. The misleading thing about Guinness is that people think it's a heavy thick beer when in reality it's pretty light. One pint of Guinness has around 125 calories...... which is just a few more than Bud Light

Some of my favorite stouts:
Old Rasputin

Founders Imperial stout

Lion Stout

But the best stuff is the stout I make myself. I start with the Imperial stout kit here: http://www.brewersbestkits.com/recipes2.html
and use oak chips soaked in Jameson Irish whiskey during second fermentation. Now THAT'S a stout.

I've mellowed out over the years. Although a good stout goes well with a red meat dish, I prefer a pilsner for a refreshing treat. As far as all these new "fruity" micro brews....no thank you

Guinness is the only stout I like.

I'm a fan of ales, pale ales and, to a somewhat lesser extent, IPA's.

Loves me some Guinness, though.

I like Left Hand Milk Stout, although I've never tried the Nitro version. Yes, it is sweet, so I only have one when I'm in the mood for sweet.

Nitrogen-pushed beers are not fizzy, because they are not carbonated. Guinness is the perfect example. They still have a nice creamy long-lasting head if poured correctly.

See, and I like Left Hand and personally think (Canadian - I like real Irish Guinness) Guinness is too bland/watery. But, to each their own.

Nitrogen gives smaller bubbles and more ' mouth feel ' texture to your beer ,

Every time I try something new, I regret that I just didn't buy some Honey Brown or Michelob AmberBoch.

I've stopped trying new stuff.

Ever try Polygamy Porter from Utah (this is no joke -- it's a good beer)? Like it says on the label, "Why settle for just one?"
