Default Duane Allman - 43 years today

Duane Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident 43 years ago today (Oct 29, 1971). He was only 24 but left a legacy and influenced many a player.

Any fans here?

You bet! I'm a big fan and still love ABB, too.

One here for sure. As far as i'm concerned most soulful slide player that's ever lived. RIP Duane.

Loved Duane's work!

Here are all three of Duane's Les Pauls at the final shows of the Allman Brothers that concluded last night, courtesy of Galadrielle Allman and the Big House Foundation:

Gold top, Cherry burst, and "Hot 'lanta" (tobacco burst)

Great pic, Bob! Galadrielle is Duane's daughter. I didn't realize she was out and about with the band.

Duane died shortly after Live at Filmore East came out. That's a landmark live album for sure.

She doesn't travel with the band but she did recently put out an exhaustive bio of her dad. The two sunburst Les Pauls were loaned to a couple of Duane's friends with the understanding that they would go to Galladrielle when she came of age. Being people of honor, those two friends indeed brought them back to her. She's kept them in the Rock and Roll hall of fame for several years but has occasionally pulled them out for special occasions.

The last time these two were with Duane in '71.

Galladrielle with hot 'Lanta.

My favourite Duane story was that told in a documentary I watched about Rich Hall, of Muscle Shoals studio fame.

He said that come lunch-time, most of the boys would all go to a local diner.

Apart from Duane, and Wilson Pickett, both of whose "look" drew too much unfriendly attention from some of the local good ol' boys.

This was Alabama in 1968.

So while the others were away, Duane persuaded Wilson to do a cover of "Hey Jude". Mr. Pickett thought it was a crazy idea, but it just might work ....

Oh yes, big fan.
I just about wore through "Loan me a Dime" with Boz Scaggs on that anthology
vinyl when it first came out.
That and so many other pieces.
The loss to the music world was immeasurable.

I am also a fan of Duane, and was inspired by his playing.

One of my favorite tunes he played on, besides his work with the ABB, was Layla by Derrick and the Dominoes. I love Duane's slide work and think it really makes the song.

One of my favorite albums is Live At The Fillmore East. I love Duane's slide on Statesboro Blues. I never get tired of that album. I have it on vinyl and CD.

To Dru Edwards, thank you for starting this thread.

Duane's slide style, along with that of a certain guy he taught, Joe Walsh, inform all of my bottleneck playing. There were certain ways Duane attacked a note on slide that I learned. I've since branched out into lap steel as well, but still, the acorn doesn't fall very far from the tree.

And yes, I think Duane made Layla.

Huge fan, just about wore out both Eat a Peach and Live at the Fillmore East. Also , hot 'Lanta has about the prettiest top ever put on a Les Paul.

You're welcome guys. I'm going to have to listen to some Live at Fillmore East this week-end while I'm driving.
