1890's Luscomb banjo basket case
1890's Luscomb banjo.

A web search turned up some info but not much. It seems they had a metal wrapped, wooden rim. I found a patent copy but not much else on the particulars of the pot construction. Any ideas or info appreciated. http://www.google.com/patents/US504810 The headstock looks like it has seen some water, but the inlays are fantastic. This one should be fun...

There's definitely been some water damage, and perhaps some dry rot on that headstock, as well. If you rub the black wood on that headstock, does black sawdust rub off on your thumb? If so, it might be pearwood dyed black with aniline dye, which after all this time can make the wood crumble.
If that's part of what's happened to it, it might not be worth expending the effort. Sure is pretty inlay, though, I'll grant you that. Keep us posted on what you decide to do. Wade Hampton Miller
