Ok, I've got question for you. If your dad gave you his first Martin a 1976 D35 and you could'nt play anymore for some reason, would you sell it or ask him if he wanted it back.

For sure, I'd first ask him if he wanted it back.

Well I'd want to keep the guitar in the family, wouldn't you? Not only is it a great old guitar, it also has sentimental value and it was yours or someones dads. It's also a D35 so it's an easy one for me. If you can't play it and your dad doesn't want or need it back I'd have a display cabinet made and have it right in the middle of my house.

What do you know right now about whether he'd likely want it? If you don't know, do ask. You can't go wrong extending a courtesy.

It should be an easy thing to talk about, explore the situation together and see how you both feel. Then make a decision.

To me, this is a no brainer..

I don't think I could even consider selling the guitar without offering it back to my Dad...

If it's his decision to offer it for sale, so be it...

I know I'd give anything to have my Dad's old Gibson Hummingbird, whether I could play it or not...

As my Dad died inn 1975 - unlikely, but I understand the principle, and yes it should be offered back so that he could make whatever gesture he wanted.

I would offer to give it back--or to pass it along within the family with the input and agreement of the father.

So Smitty: any chance that you are the father in this scenario?

I'm with Alex. Guitars are beautiful and make wonderful display items if you can't or don't play them. If being your dad's guitar adds sentimental value for you, so much the better.

One of my best friends and playing partner was killed in a plane crash a few years ago. His family gave me his prized vintage Gibson Hummingbird. I have a difficult time playing it because of shoulder injuries and its size , but it has a proud and permanent place in my display cabinet.
