Have you ever worked out a Jerry Reed instrumental?
Ive been trying Jerry's breakdown,, which is a tune on one of the
discs he did with Chet Atkins, Ive really had to slowly train my right hand to do patterns thay have never done quite that way before, Anyone else tackled some of Jerry's tunes? Rick |

I do Amos Moses and I can play the Jerry lick in it good but it's not an instrumental and it's no where close to the song you're talking about.

Jerry Reed is one of my favorites. I have a few of his songs worked out.
They include - "Blue Finger" "Jiffy Jam" "La Madrugada" "The Claw" - About half way there. I just started this one. I now have about 2/3's of it completed. I hope to have it down by next weekend. I'm off work Two days this week and will have the house to myself to practice. This is just the intro - Reedology Scott

Reed Instrumentals
If it helps to see some shots of The Claw actually being played by him, he does it with Chet on their performance video Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed at the Bottom Line (1992) Some great playing on there.
Can anyone give a recommendation for a CD that contains a few of Jerry's instrumentals? Chet recorded about 40 of Reed's instrumentals, but I was interested in hearing Jerry's versions. Thanks!

I play Jerry's Breakdown (not up to speed yet and it's only taken me since 2000 off and on!) but only Jerry's part, not Chet's. When I try it at full speed it's more like Gerry Breaks Down! I also do The Claw, Jiffy Jam and have been meaning to work on Reedology sometime. Learnt it all from tab rather than working it out, though.
Used to know a few others but when you don't keep 'em in your fingers, you tend to forget.

trying to eat soup with a fork" Thats kind of the way it is for me. Funny thing is, Jerry does not like playing his own instrumentals he works them out and then forgets them,,, Jerry Reed probably could not play Reedology, or even remember it if you asked him. It was at Chet Atkins urging that any of Jerrys Instrumentals were recorded. He would rather sing, stomp his feet, and act like , well like Jerry. Ive met the guy several times,, but i dont "know him" I did ask him how he plays certain lines and he said "SON, i cant remember what i did five minutes ago" I dont think i could ever really know that guy.. let just say he's a little different. Rick - I like the quote by John Knowles. Its some of the hardest stuff for me to learn. I think thats what motivates me to learn more of it though. Jerry has such a unique right hand style. He rarely uses his index finger at all. He tucks it up and uses his Middle and Ring Finger most of the time. Thats where "The Claw" came from. Chet said his right hand looked like a "Claw" when he played and the name stuck. I've never had the privilage to see him play live in person. I do have his DVD with Chet and a few private videos of his playing. If he ever decides to tour again, I'll be there. I'm glad we players are keeping his music alive. I don't think there will ever be another Mr. Hubbard. Scott

If not , you should,,, you would enjoy it and learn a lot. Jerry Reed tunes are slicker than owl sh*t on a linolium floor. I hope i can dig into a few more, but i better nail down Jerry's breakdown before i loose it. Rick |

Rick,
CAAS? I'm asumming your speaking of the "Chet Atkins Appreciation Society". I'm not familiar with it at all. I've only read about it here and other forums. I'm not sure what its about. Do you mind telling me a bit about it? Is it an annual event? Good luck with "Jerry's Breakdown". My hands are full with "Reedology" at the present time but I want to learn/arrange Papa's Knee in the near future. ps. I can remember as a small child riding in my Dad's pickup truck as he listened to "Alabama Wildman" on his 8-Track player. I guess it kind of stuck with me. Scott

Scott, yes it is an annual event , every July,, this year i think it starts July 13... great event.. workshops, concerts, jamming Luthier display rooms, merchant display rooms... Lawrence Juber shows up, Richard Smith, even Jerry Reed occasionally, but not since Chets death. Look here www.bizland.com/caas.htm also an interesting forum.... www.misterguitar.com/wwwboard/ Let me know what you think. Rick |

I can play three of Jerry's solo tunes - Mr. Lucky, Jiffy Jam, and The Early Dawn - thanks to a a book put out by Mel Bay called "Jerry Reed Heavy Neckin'". It was transcribed by John Knowles and has musical notation and tabs. The copyright date is 1980, but I don't know if it's still available or not. I believe it came with a cassette too, though I'm not sure where it is and I don't remember it as being particularly helpful. Those three clicked for me pretty easily, and I've only worked on a couple of the others. The book also contains transcriptions of The Claw, Struttin', Reedology, and Blue Finger plus the three I mentioned. Jerry is the Man!

CAAS is great. I've only been there once (in 2000) but still remember it. Jerry Reed's tunes are hard! I've got Buster B. Jones Bagful of Tricks, Pocketful of Licks and Guitar Style of Jerry Reed videos and those are great. For some reason, I find Reedology really hard to remember.
