OP, if you're referring to stage sound (and not studio) you really need a very good (expensive!) mic and above all a very experimented sound engineer with the right hardware to get a good sound (close to the guitar sound) and no feedback. This is rarely the case.
A good pickup will enable you to have a safer approach. Your sound will be more different to the guitar sound compared to a mic but you'll have less feedback and less problems (no need to stay close to the mic for instance). In any case no acoustic guitar can sound like it is not amplified when it is amplified in a PA system. |

For real world stages in clubs etc. without a band the best set up I have found is K & K mini into a Fishman Aura Spectrum. It's a modeler. Plug into a mic cable and most anyone running sound can easily deal with it to have a decent sound.
Everybody knows that all sound men are absolutely great at running sound. But my experience is not as good as everybody's. In fact often it's a musician helping out or a DJ on an off night or something besides what one would hope for. So a thread like this will most likely be answered by sound men that know something about running sound. Personally I plan for the reality of whats out there most of the time.

For performing, I personally prefer a microphone. As a sound engineer, a pickup allows me to get decent sound, but is preferred to instrument microphones as most musicians I've worked with have almost no concept of microphone placement and technique to get the best sound and eliminate feedback.

I've tried many pick ups . the Dean Markleys , Baggs M1s ,JB transducers, and several others , but oddly , the best Natural sounding pickup ive used is the inexpensive ebay AXL Suction cup transducer with the 9 foot chord , running thru an outboard SansAmp preamp . VERY Woody and realistic sound not found with any other pickup .
