Default nylon/steel doubleneck

Has anyone on the forum run across a double-neck with nylon and steel strings?

I'm sure Emerald would make you one if that's your thing.

What he said! There's really no other builder that produces a doubleneck let alone one willing and able to customize like that. And we know, Alistair loves such challenges.

It's a bad idea because steel string and nylon string guitars are braced totally differently. Either Steel strings will sound good and nylon bad or nylon good and steel bad etc.

Hmmm...what if there is no bracing to affect the tone?

I'm not saying Emerald wouldn't be able to bring up a master piece, but I agree that it would be difficult because the steel strings will require a heavier build, not suited to nylon strings.

Don't know much about it, but, maybe a carbon fibre solution might work.

Hi guys,

As you are aware, the custom possibilities on the Chimaera are endless and we have, indeed, built a custom 6-Nylon 12-Steel Chimaera. If you ever would like to have a more in-depth custom chat, Evan, Alistair is always available.

Thanks

Sean

I find the notion of a double neck 6 nylon and 12 steel very difficult to imagine. As electrics, the notion seems possible. But as an acoustic instrument it seems like it would be difficult to get nylon sound out of a box designed to take the tension of 12 strings.

Sean: are there any sound tracks for this instrument?

Hi Evan,

I must ask the owner of this custom Chimaera if he has recorded anything and if he would be amenable to giving us a review. I have also asked Alistair to give me a few notes on these types of custom builds to pass onto you guys. I will get back to you with further information shortly.

Best Wishes

Sean

Hi guys,

So I spoke to Alistair regarding making these custom Chimaeras. He references the white Chimaera I posted for you and said we actually have another on order.

Alistair said it was quite successful, but one cannot achieve the optimal properties for a great nylon. "I would see it more as an amplified instrument that has a very acceptable nylon string tone. We just have to build the top a little bit too stiff to really get the best from the nylon neck."

I hope this assists you further!

best Wishes

Sean
