Default Blank Tab and Fretboard Diagrams

In another thread someone asked me how I did tab like this

Code:
   D       A                           D
E╓───────2───────2─┬───────0───────0─┬───────2───────2─┬───────2─────────┐

D╟─0───────────────┼─────────2───────┼─0───────────────┼─0───────────────┤
A╟─────────0───────┼─0───────────────┼─────────0───────┼─────────0───────┤
E╙─────────────────┴─────────────────┴─────────────────┴─────────────2───┘

This is a text file. All the characters come from a Unicode character set that I found on a Windows XP system. You hold down the Alt Key and punch numbers into the numeric Keypad on the right hand side of a PC keyboard. I did this into a text editor. In Windows it was called Notepad. An example would be to open something like Notepad, hold down 'Alt', type in 65 and you should get a capital 'A'. There are hundreds of these and some characters can be used to make frames, blank tab and fretboard diagrams.

Here are some blanks you might want to use;

Code:

These diagrams were made using these characters

• = 7

╫ = 215

┘ = 217
┌ = 218

╜ = 189

┐ = 191

and here are some notes on how to use and save them;

Saving these files.

In Windows use a text editor like Notepad. If the appearance of the file changes on saving, it is because of the 'Encoding'. In Windows the default encoding is ANSI and the characters here require Unicode or Unicode 8. The first time you save the file choose the 'Save As' option. The bottom text box defines the encoding. Change this to Unicode or Unicode 8 then save the file as normal.

Editing the files

My normal practice is to copy the part of this file which I want to use into a new text file and then start editing in the new file.

In normal editing mode, with the cursor as a vertical line, typing in a character moves subsequent characters one place to the right. To correct this you then have to press delete to bring it all back into line. If you press the 'Insert' on your keyboard, the cursor changes to a highlighted rectangle and anything you type replaces what is already there and you don't need to press 'Delete'.

Posting on a forum

To maintain the spacings in this stuff when posting tab on a forum put the word 'code' in square brackets before post and '/code' in square brackets after.

In this forum use the '#' button and the code symbols are written for you with the cursor in between ready for pasting.

NOTE this is intended for use on PCs. I'm told the diagrams don't work on phones.

Of course some of these characters were designed to produce the kind of screen framing graphics which preceded Windows. The sort of thing you see when you go into your bios on boot up.

I did a DOS course back in the 90s. Now I use Linux. The Linux equivalent of DOS, I suppose, is the terminal command. An expression that can have two distinct meanings.

Bless you, stanron, for including the templates. I asked you about them. I was rather afraid that they were unicode and wasn't relishing inputting all that, but they are so readable and I usually hate squinting at tabs. Thank you!
