Fixing flaws
https://i.imgur.com/TbVzEPr.jpg
https://i.imgur.com/llyO3Y2.jpg I started a ukulele a few years ago and came to a halt. I'm looking to finish it now, but I have a few flaws I'd like to cover up before I continue. First, I accidentally sanded through the rosette and I'm curious what I can do to fix it. Second, there is a gap between the binding and the body. In hindsight I made the binding to thick, but hindsight is a pain. Is this something I would fill with thin ca or something along those lines? Thanks for your ideas and time.

A couple potential fixes... Depending on how much rosette channel you have left.
1. Get a new rosette. Pull this one out and inlay it back in. 2. Get some 0.020" black purfling strip and inlay that into the gaps. It won't match exactly - but nobody will know from a distance. 3. Barring all that... Pull the rosette out. Paint the whole channel and about 1" of the top with shellac. Fill the rosette groove with black tinted epoxy. Level it to the top and off you go.. Thanks |

You might try cyanoacrilate with a sliver of binding wood & sawdust as a gap filler for that binding repair. Or, remove and replace binding area using a kerf cut to blend.

CA in sawdust looks horrible for anything larger than very small...

Sorry to say, but I would recut the rosette, anything else is just going to eat away at you when the job is finished

Remove rosette, deepen routed channel with exacto knife and chisel and install new rosette.
Peel back binding on shorter side, clean ledge of glue, reinstall. Been there, done that. If you are careful, the redo will be invisible. This repair work is part of the game for beginners in my experience. |
