Default Kay body + Taylor GS Mini neck = Octave Mandolin

Here's a fun project that mated an old Kay guitar body and a Taylor GS Mini neck to make a pretty decent octave mandolin:

The complete story, additional photos, and YouTube demonstration video can be found on my mandolin website page here:

Thumbs up Awesomeness

How cool is that? I want one!

I played a Taylor mini not to long ago & it was a lot of fun to noodle around on.

Nice job.

Yes, It was the purchase of a GS Mini that got the whole ball rolling on this conversion. I have some very nice guitars but I purchased the Taylor GS Mini hoping it would at least sound OK and would be easier on my collarbone which was pulverized when my black lab got too exuberent about chasing a ball while I was on the other end of a 25 foot flexi lead.
I found I could play the 23-1/2" scale Taylor for hours with no pain while subsequently being somewhat amazed at just how good this instrument sounded.

The rest is history, as they say.

I do quite a bit of instrument construction so I had a pretty good idea why the Taylor sounded so good; the Kay body was constructed in much the same manner, so my intuition about the outcome paid off.

That is a very cool project. I love that kind of stuff and the result is so nice looking. I watched your demo video and it sounds so cool too. I mean I really like that a lot.

This is an inventive way to save an old guitar, and the result is terrific! Thanks for sharing it with us.

You're entirely welcome. The more I play this the more I like it. Trouble is, my other stuff gets neglected!

Thanks, midwinter.

My friend with the Weber Octar came over and we played dual octaves. It's a huge sound and we discussed doing a demo video or with the two octaves.
