Strings for oval hole/floating neck pu?
Looking for some new choices for my Eastman 904ce, oval hole archtop. Looking for both acoustic and electric tone. Equipped with Kent Armstrong floating pu.
It’s a fairly thick solid spruce top, maple b/s. Sounds pretty good pure acoustically, with JP PB lights. Can likely take mediums. Potential use is chord melody, jazz samba, perhaps swing etc. Any ideas and rationales welcome! Thanks. |

I would try Monels or a heavier gauge electric nickel string.

Thanks HHP, and funny you should mention those choices.
Medium gauge nickel electrics are what’s on there now. They’re ok amplified, but not good acoustically. Monels are lined up, 12’s. Also considering JP pure nickel acoustics, and d’addario NB in acoustic sets of 12’s or 13’s. Like everything, I’m going to have to see (hear) for myself. Thinking about either going to a 2nd pu, KK or ust, but want to see what the collective wisdom might produce for the existing floater at the neck. Unlike some folks, I really don’t like changing strings over and over again, just my personal peeve. But shucks, that’s the only real way. I think monels are next on, thanks. I’m also looking at what TI puts out under the “jazz” heading, Bensons etc. Regards, Mark. |
