Default If You Don't Want To Damage Your Guitar...NEVER

I have read through a lot of threads (doing searches) and see enough "I did this and damaged my guitar..." posts to float this for younger (newer) players. If you want to keep your guitar's in less-than-damaged condition, NEVER.......

Never set your guitar down leaning against..... anything.

Never leave your case open so the lid can/will fall.

Never close your case (with or without guitar inside) without latching at least one latch. Get into the habit of latching the case.

Never pick your case up without checking ALL of your latches.

Never pick up your guitar by a strap.

Never lay your guitar down. Not on a couch. Not on the floor. Not in your open case........NEVER.

Never put your guitar into, or remove your guitar from its case without holding the lid fully open with one hand.

Never walk around with your guitar strung around your neck on a strap....

Feel free to add.

Never put it in direct sunlight
Never put it near a heat source
Never get lazy checking humidity
Never leave it on a stand for too long
The list goes on.

Don't leave it in your car with the windows rolled up on a sunny day.

I walk around playing all the time. I rarely sit to practice and never when playing out. Actually bothers my back if I sit too long.

It's best to always leave it locked in its case with a humidifier, stored in a location no one (even yourself) can get to. Get a cheap guitar to play while your guitar remains safe.

Never let go of your guitar before checking the strap's security on the strap buttons (meaning: the straps can slip/pop/fall off and if you assume they are secure it might come off. I've caught my guitar multiple times when I put the strap over my should and let go and it suddenly falls. Very close calls.

Make it a habit to run your hands/fingers over the strap button(s) to make sure the strap is on there securely.

Don't stand your case on end, or lean it against something unless there is a corner to keep it from tipping over. A case falling over flat can cause enough headstock whip to crack the neck.

TW

Pad (as in immobilize) both sides of the headstock when shipping.

Hi Jambi. I wonder if you would explain what you mean in your post. My reaction to your statement is if you're going to leave your guitar in locked and in the case all the time, why would you have it to begin with? Following, wouldn't you treat a cheap guitar with the same respect as a not so cheap guitar? I'm sure your point there is that damage to a less expensive guitar might be less emotionally stressful but who's to judge what is cheap or not? We're all of different means.

Never place your guitar within the falling radius of a Microphone Stand. Yes I know from experience

That sounds like something we boys were told frequently as kids in Catholic school.
