Doggone right. And thanks officer for being out there for us. You are supported by the public more than you will ever know regardless of the anti-cop crap we see in the media. I'll close this post with a quote from a fictional Hollywood cop, but axiomatic none the less: "There's nothing wrong with shooting as long as the right people are being shot." Amen.

It is so sad that we have to have police with firearms nowadays.

Watched the villain arrested, hand-cuffed and questioned, and then taken away. Someone said that he was known to them and a local violent type.

I was worried about the police cars by my car, but no damage observed.

I do understand that we now have armed police at our airports, and I once saw an armed policeman at railway station when a lot of immigrants got off a train - dunno if it was related.

Hateful that there are people around who need such a response.

Back to painting the shed!
By all means, tell the criminals to give up their weapons and stop doing nasty things. Problem solved.

I'm losing hope for the longevity of this thread.

From my view, it would be shocking to me to experience a culture in which the citizens were NOT armed to the teeth. I grew up in a sea of firearms and was provided with different versions of them at each stage of life. Was trained by both grandparents in the use of shotguns and pistols, with the strict, self-enforced rules of engagement. Every guy I grew up with, and some of the girls, was raised the same. In my neck of the woods alone, there are sufficient guns and ammo to take over several small countries. And yet, we live beside each other relatively peacefully. I really have no fear of the armed, known-violent type wreaking too much havoc in my neighborhood.

I'd much prefer to live in a world in which weapons were completely unnecessary but that's just something to Imagine. For now, I prefer to be prepared for Reality. I suffer from no delusions that an armed benevolent benefactor will always protect me from the wolves.

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have, a number of times. There are very scary parts of the city I had to pass through for business including where the people I called on were on the fringe of it. It is pretty third-world like, as bad or worse than anything in Detroit or Chicago and encompassing a large piece of geography. Obviously, it's not all like that but what you see on television is a part-truth, go figure.
As far as the gun thing, well in the good old U.S. of America, it's part of our heritage. It's how we got free from tyranny, fed ourselves and defended our families. I realize it might look abhorrent to some, but we were guaranteed to keep ourselves safe by those who established this nation. They understood the necessity of it.

I live in South West Scotland and hear gunshots behind my cottage on a regular basis , however, luckily for me its just the local pheasant population under fire from the Henrys in their Land Rovers ...

If guns make us safer then war zones are the safest place on earth.

I think one drawback to that line of thinking is that it sees the world in terms of binary opposites: "the wolves" i.e. the bad guys, and "us", the goodies. Unfortunately, the world is not so conveniently divided. "Good" Mr. Smith, who always paid his taxes and never belched in front of children and old ladies, may well turn into a wolf capable of killing hi wife, his children and then himself the day she comes home and tells him she's leaving. All too often, the good guys are the bad guys and vice-versa.

Got me on that one, It reminds me of one of my favorite western movies, Tombstone. Love Val Kilmer as Doc Holliday, "I'll be your huckelberry".
