Default Bluesy

Found this in the attic. An old recording of an even older song I wrote years ago.

My foot's tappin'!! Really great!! Once again, IMO, the most beautiful recording sound on AGF....just stunning clarity and quality.

It does sound really good Derek! Very interesting composition and very well played -- most enjoyable! Well done Derek! I like it!

Your trebles seem to really pop out of the recording. I'm not sure if it's because you might be using a fair amount of compression or if that is just the quality of your guitar, or if that sound has something to do with how you play, maybe how you pick those particular treble notes. It's certainly an interesting sound and it's appealing. Or are you applying a fair amount of compression after the recording?

Do you use finger picks? Or nails? Just curious... I've spend 50 years recording guitar, but I have never quite heard your particular sound before. I think that is what islandguitar is reacting to, though I can only guess. As I noted above, it's a good sound, appealing.

Thanks Glenn. I recorded this a few years ago. It's pretty close to a raw recording (no compression used as I never use compression) with just a wee bit of reverb. This particular guitar (a Sitka/EIR Collings C10 Deluxe) is throaty and projects well. I play with fingernails (sometimes bare fingers).

Though my recording sound is still somewhat hit or miss with various mike positions, my recording sound has on average improved considerably since I have done acoustic room treatment and have obtained other recording gear that I am happy with.

Hi Derek,

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds like it's just the character of this guitar plus your picking technique. It really does sound like compression, but maybe it's the guitar doing that. I have never played a Collings C10. That is something I need to add to my list of things to do!

Very interesting!

Glenn, regarding how this guitar has recorded for me, here is another recording I did on it which I think captures its tone well:
