Alvarez Masterworks MD65?
I've been looking to get a new dreadnought and had been eyeing a Seagull S6 Slim for some time, figuring that the guitar plus case would cost about $500. But it looks like Alvarez dealers are running great specials on the old Masterworks line in order to start selling the newest iteration. For even less than what I planned on spending for the Seagull it looks like I can get a heck of a deal on a sweet Alvarez:

I've not heard of the "MD65" but I do have a MD80-12 (Spruce/Mahogany) that has beautiful appointments, is very playable, and has a warm sound. Masterworks is their top of the line series and uses all solid woods. I do not think you will be disappointed.

Wow! that is a great price.
Alvarez is making some great guitars. They have always been a good value...lots of tone for the buck. They are also very playable since the set up and QC happens at St. Louis Music before they are sent out to the dealers. At that price it would be tough to beat. Cedar w/ Mahogany should make for a warm sounding guitar.

I have no experience w/that model, bu I've owned several Alvarez guitars. And always considered them among the best of the moderately priced class of guitars.

I love my MD70. And I had to wait years, YEARS, to find one locally.

Absolutely ridiculous good deal for how much guitar that is! No experience with that model, but every Artist, Professional series, or Masterworks series Alvarez I've played has been very nice and good bargains at regular price.

+2 I haven't owned one, but have played several at a local shop over the years. The Masterworks series are very good guitars. Go for it!

So I did it. This morning I placed an order for the MD65. I'm looking forward to its arrival and will post the obligatory pics once it arrives.
Thanks for the words of encouragement. Neither my level of talent nor my budget allow for constant, high end guitar purchases, so each purchase is a big deal to me. Last edited by briluster; 02-05-2015 at 05:15 PM. Reason: spelling correction |

I have a Masterworks MD70 and it is simply a fantastic guitar. Not only do I think so but so do my manager (a Martin player) and my guitar instructor (a professional musician who plays a Martin D-28). The both are shocked at just how great this guitar is. So, if it were just me thinking this I would say I was nuts but the fact that these two, in my real world experience, are saying it I have to believe it is true.

The PD is a "Professional" series Dreadnought. It is a notch above the Artist series. They tend to be far more ornate. They are a step below the Masterworks. So, PD85SC? Professional Dreadnought 8 is likely Rosewood 5 denotes a solid cedar top. The SC is solid top with a cutaway. The AV? I'm not sure. But usually that would be the color. Is it some shade of violet? Or "antique varnish?"

The MD 65 has a good sound I had one back in 2009 kept it till 2013 sold it and bought the newly configured D18. I was looking at one last week thinking I should get it because my old one sounded so good. Loved the cedar/hog combo.
