I'm gonna go way back here...
When I got my first guitar with S&H Green stamps, I also took my first real lessons on public TV with folk guitarist, Laura Weber. You'd watch her lessons on her show and follow along with the lesson books you ordered by mail. No VCR or TIVO back then. You had to make sure you were in front of the tube when the program aired. She passed in '95. I, and many others owe her a lot so... Here's a toast to Miss Laura. |

Bryan Sutton. Very tasteful in both rhythm and lead playing.
As a bluegrasser, I find nothing as obnoxious as listening to a five part bluegrass band play lead over other. Sounds like a swarm of bees. There's often a complete disregard for nuance and musicality. Just play full steam ahead boys! A lot of bluegrassers would do well to consider slowing down, playing less, or even removing themselves to allow the song to breathe. If the mandolin is taking the lead, do we really need to hear a banjo going a hundred miles an hour just behind the mandolin? No. Less is more.

Many changes and influences in 53 years playing but for last 7 years or so, probably Dave Rawlings...

Another vote for Pete Townshend, who strums a guitar as if it were a percussion instrument.
