Default Taylor Sinker BTO Binding, Purfling, Wedge opinions

I am planning a Taylor GA 12 Fret, Sinker Redwood / Indian Rosewood BTO. Gotoh 510, No electronics. Dots Fretboard Inlay, Rosewood Headstock Overlay.

Most of these that I have seen photos of are done with Ebony binding and B/W/B W/W/B Purfling, No Wedge Back.

I am thinking about Cocobolo binding B/W/B W/W/B Purfling and anywhere from .2, mini wedge or standard wedge Cocobolo on the back.

I just love the look of the Abalone, Paua Single ring bound Sound hole Rosette on the Sinker top.

I am really trying to keep the cost down. I'm over budget with that Rosette already.

Your comments will be greatly appreciated.

Not sure what your budget is but you can keep costs on by going with a black plastic binding for free, otherwise the Ebony or Cocobolo, even Rosewood will add $400 to the list price. As to purfling, it's hard to go wrong with white fiber.

FYI there are dozens of pictures of custom Taylors on our site, feel free to browse them for ideas.

Any disadvantage to the Black Plastic? Shrinking? Cracking?, Does it look cheap.

If you are going BTO, I would strongly advise going with a wood binding.
It really adds a nice touch, and the "list price" isn't necessarily what you pay..
It will add a very nice touch of class to the instrument, and be far more appealing to buyers if you ever did decide you needed to sell it..

Of the many customs Ted has built, one was done for me that had similar specs for what you want to build (rosewood with redwood, cocobolo bindings) if you wanted to take a look.

Like Ted said, wood binding has a big price tag. But, once you have the binding, getting even a wide back wedge barely costs anything at all (if I recall correctly, it's $50 list). I specced out a sinker/EIR BTO with ebony binding and was very pleased with the back wedge. Not as pleased with the way it sounded, but that's a story for another thread...

What was the problem?

Does a Standard 3pc wedge vs 2pc make any difference in sound?

You should have no problem with the plastic binding structurally, and it will look similar to Ebony. BTW, I don't believe the .200 back strip will be available to you unless you go with wood binding.

Here was mine. I wish I had it back!!

I happen to like the way Sinker looks and sounds with Ebony. Not sure if any is available, or what it does to the pricing.

My 710 has black plastic and I've had that guitar since new. I have had zero problems with shrinking or cracking. My GS has cocobolo binding, and I think it is beautiful. I love the reddish coloration, and it really pops in certain light. I also feel ebony would look very classy. I have even seen several rosewood guitars with rosewood binding, and I thought it gave those guitars an understated, but elegant touch.

I love the way wood binding looks, and my next guitar will for sure have cocobolo binding. (Or maybe koa)

Good luck with your decision!
