Default School me on all-mahogany guitars

I've never owned one, only tried one of the lower end Martin's. I'm partial to my spruce top Martin's (DC-16, D-35) but I'm curious about something different. I like a longer scale dreadnaught, preferably with a cutaway and electronics. I like a full, darker, tone, and I play jazz chord melody and Travis picking stuff.
At first glance a lot of the mahogany guitars seem to be basic, more beginner/intermediate. I have a bonus and a big-ger birthday coming up, so I can set my sights a little higher....

Well, I own a Martin OMC 15e and I love it.
It has a darker, more mid-rangey voice than Spruce. You can wail away on all Hog guitars as opposed to Cedar so they are great for flat picking and strumming. I use mine for everything and since it has a cutout, I can play all the way up the neck and I do.
As far as Dreads go, I probably personally prefer a smaller body like mine or a 00 or a 000 in Mahogany. I would mind a D15 M but it would likely get little playing time as my D18 and Pono SS would still dominate.

I would suggest that you get your hands on a '30's or early '40's Martin 0-17 or 00-17 (depending on your nut width preference).

'30's era would have a wider 1 3/4 nut, while early '40's would be 1 11/16".

All of these have pre-war scalloped bracing. Amazingly alive, vibrant, warm guitars, and a great value in pre-war instruments.

Very early '30's Gibson L-0's are also outstanding values in all-mahogany guitars.

I have a D15 with a Baggs M80, as well as higher end guitars. It does everything I want. Records well. Light. Punchy when I want, Dark when I want.

Maybe this is your guitar?

I've noticed that satin finished all hogs sound more woody than gloss.

you can't go wrong with a Martin OM-15 for just over a grand. However Santa Cruz, Collings and Bougeous make some fantastic all hog guitars if you want to go really high end.

Not much to school on really. Like all guitar purchases one should play as many as possible and, if they like one, consider buying one. Some people dislike an all Mahogany guitar and other's have only all Mahogany guitars. Buy what you like. As stated, a Martin 000-15M is about as good as a guitar can get.

I've got a Larrivee L-05MT. Resonant, woody and warm, with a strong mid-range, clear bass notes, and sweet trebles. It's my favorite guitar of all time. Here's a link to one - although mine sounds much better! Larrivee L05-MT. I picked up mine used in 2015, for about $800.00. Best money I spent that year. I've got other nice guitars, but since I got this one, the rest have become dust-catchers.

Okay, here are four to consider (the custom Martin listed is a higher end guitar than their basic D-15M, and the Taylor checks all your boxes):

So are any of these modern "hog" tops built with real mahogany, or are they mainly topped with substitutes such as khaya, sapele, sipo etc? If so, is there a difference in tone for the different varieties?

Thanks, of those, I think the Taylor is the closest to what I'm looking for, but it doesn't seem to be available anymore. Among the Martin's, the DC-15ME seems closest.

Default Hogs

I am the proud owner of an all hog Collings D1M - 14 fret dread, standard scale.
Probably one of the coolest sounding guitars I have had the experience to own:
Much warmer tone than a Mah with any top. Woody as well.
Notes are more rounded, not sharp nor bright.
Plenty of projection.
With all that, it still has the Collings note clarity and sustain.

Smitten with this wood combo....
