Looping question
Hello, I recently bought a zoom g3xn, but I am having a hard time with the loop. I am new to this so I'm not familiar with the terminology but I will try to explain what I am trying to do.
If I first loop 1 measure, then when I overdub on top of it, I notice that I can only overdub 1 measure worth of material. If I go over 1 measure that I initially looped, it just starts looping the 1 measure worth that I have overdubbed, and the rest is not registered. Does this mean that it is impossible to overdub more than the initial time that I have looped? For example, I do a repeat of 4 beats (1 measure) at the very beginning. Then I stack up harmonies on top of it (using an electric violin), each worth 4 beats (1 measure). Until here, I am good. But I would like to input a melody worth 16 beats (4 beats) and loop this melody. So far, I have been unsuccessful because the melody cuts off at the first measure and starts looping only that. Am I doing something wrong, or is this something impossible using a loop? Please help- I've been searching it up online but I am having trouble understanding the system. Please explain it in baby words, I am very new at this! Thank you so much!!! |

You can only overdub for the length of time as your initial loop. So if you lay down 16 seconds for your initial loop, subsequent overdubs can only be 16 seconds long (or less).
This is typical of every looper I've ever used.

Yes, what Y said.
Actually, if you keep the 'recording' live, you will start a 3rd loop if you keep on playing past the measure's end, so you will your original loop, plus the 2nd single-measure melody PLUS whatever else you play after that on the 3rd loop. (Assuming your looper has multiple/infinite overdubs).

Hi 1201mj
First of all, Hello and Welcome to the Forum! Glad you joined and asked a question. You already had the right answer from Yamaha Guy. With the zoom g3xn you have an 80 second looper, so you have potential to record up to 40 seconds of loop and overdub once for 40 seconds, or you could do a 20 second loop and overdub it 4 times (that might be a bit much). Loopers are fun - so have a great time. |
